The Michigan Daily- Friday, April 17, 1987-- Page 11 BO DOWNPLAYS BLUE-WHITE GAME'S IMPORTANCE Spr ingru By RICK KAPLAN The spring football game is the pinnacle of spring football practice. The veterans are rounding into shape, while previous benchwarmers battle for positions vacated by graduating seniors. The spring game is the time when the athletes can truly make an impression on the coaches. Except at Michigan. Coach Bo Schembechler is treating tomorrow's game (1:30 p.m., Michigan Stadium) as seriously as the Battle of the Network Stars: it is a "sporting event" staged for entertainment purposes only. "I'm really not looking at anything in the spring game," Schembechler said. "We have (had) two days of scrimmage in practice this week. That's when we get our final look. In the spring game, we'll be divided up, having some fun. We don't get a whole lot out of that other than having some fun." HOW SERIOUSLY does Michigan treat the spring game? The sports information department does not even have a cute name for it. Schembechler laughed when a reporter joked that the game could be called "The Spring Fling" if he passed more often. "We ought to call it the Spring Run," Schembechler shot back. The fans who attend the Spring Run, however, will probably watch the passers more than the runners. With Heisman Trophy runnerup Jim Harbaugh graduating, the quarterback position is up for grabs between three candidates. T 'f ' for fun ZURBRUGG, who will be a fifth-year senior in the fall, is the most experienced. He started five games in 1984 when Harbaugh was injured. Zurbrugg passed for a Michigan record 259 yards against Purdue that season, a record Harbaugh has since eclipsed. If there is a favorite, Schembechler is not telling. "We have to be sure when we make a decision of that magnitude, that we are right," the coach said. "When the competition is as close as it is, we don't want to make a hasty decision." The decision is already made at tailback: 1,000- yard rusher Jamie Morris will start. Morris is scheduled to play for the White team tomorrow, along with Phil Webb, a strong candidate to start at fullback. With Greg McMurtry in Columbus with the baseball team, and John Kolesar out with a collar- bone injury, the receiving corps is depleted. Chris Calloway, the most impressive receiver this spring according to Schembechler, will play for the Blue. Because Schembechler sees weaknesses in his defensive backfield, he will try out two former running backs there tomorrow. Senior Ernie Holloway and David Key will make their first defensive appearances in the spring game. Former defensive lineman Warde Manuel will work out on the offensive line. Doily Photo by CAROL L. Zurbrugg and his Wolverines teammates will be in action tomorrow at Michigan Stadium at 1:30 p.m. in the Blue-White game.
