The Michigan Daily - Thursday, April 16, 1987 - Page 11 K THE SPORTING VIEWS AROUND THE HORN Nieves hurls no-hitter vs. O's C hipmunk chatter #- ' miamkes its debut By ALVIN BORROMEO Have you ever read one of these Sporting Views columns and aught: Wow! What a great what a great writer. Well, be prepared to so. Since joining The Michigan Daily sports staff, I have wanted to rite one of these, but I never got around to it. Well, I've finally got round to it and what great timing! Finals are around the corner and the tjiomework is piling up, I've still got no summer job, and here I am aying junior reporter. 4 ; Okay, enough of this tomfoolery, let's get on with the article. Here it is sports fans, the first Sporting Views by the one the only ,Alvin (and the Chipmunks) Borromeo! Drumroll please! Damn! I can't think of anything to write about. Hmmm, let's see? Drugs in athletics? Naw, already beaten to death. Bo seen wearing a dress? Naw, I'd be hanged. Hey, I know, I'll write a Mitch Albom/Joe Falls type article where I gamble on about anything and everything that pops in my head. -First of all, ain't that McEnroe a swell guy? Had to get that one in h~ere first. Mac's my hero. Always has been, always will be. -Watch out Boris Becker, Mac's back and he's gonna take the Wimbledon title from you. -Baseball is such a boring sport to watch on TV. It ranks up there with watching professional bowling on TV. God only knows how it is the top rated sport's program on Saturday afternoons. -Borowsky is right; New York sucks! -Daily sports editor, Scott G. Miller, is wrong; professional '*.wrestling sucks! -Listen to Bob Page on WRIF in the mornings. He has an excellent sports show that suits Tarkanian young sports fans well. Besides, ... living dead? the morning dj's are Pat and Wags, who come from my hometown, Columbus, Ohio. -Yes, I still root for Ohio State. -Except for THE GAME. -Tuesday night I was at Charlie's celebrating a friend's 21st, and this waiter was telling me that Ohio "is the armpit of the nation." Well anyway, she's from Texas and all I've got to say is "SMU"! -Yes, SMU is the quintessential athletic institution, ain't it? e -And that governor of their's; what an outstanding politician. Next time I need a date, I think I'll have him set me up with an SMU coed. -Speaking of SMU; congratulations to Bo and the football staff for not actively recruiting SMU players. We don't need that shit here at Michigan. -(Thank my friend Tom Cleaver for this one.) Have you ever seen a living ghost? Well, how about UNLV basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian. -Ex-Dodger player relations man, Al Campanis, has a brain with no buoyancy. Why? Because he has rocks in his head. -I miss that awful, simplistic song introducing the Sports Look how with Roy Firestone on ESPN. Now it's some generic, boring Mintro with some jerk-off mouthing it. ,p BALTIMORE (AP) - Juan Nieves threw the first no-hitter in Milwaukee Brewer history last night as the Brewers beat Baltimore 7-0 as center fielder Robin Yount of a line drive in right center by Eddie Murray to end the game. The 22-year-old leftt-hander struck out seven and walked five in intermittent drizzle as the Orioles were no-hit for the first time since Nolan Ryan, then with California, threw one on June 1, 1975. YOUNT HAD to run about 15 yards and then dove to his left to preserve the no-hitter. The Brewers then mobbed Nieves at the mound. Nieves, 2-0, who was 11-12 as a rookie last season, needed three other fine defensive playes behind him to ensure the pitching gem. Left fielder Jim Paciorek made a diving catch in the second inning and third baseman Paul Molitor made two outstanding plays, one in the fourth and the other in the fifth. Nieves, whose best previous outing was a four-hitter against Seattle last year, struck out John Shelby and Floyd Rayford to end the eighth inning. THE CROWD of 11, 407 cheered Nieves as he took the mound for the ninth inning. Ken Gerhardt was retired to lead off the inning on a routine grounder to third and Molitor also retired Rick Burleson on a soft liner off the fists. After throwing just two pitches in the inning, Nieves walked Cal Ripken on four pitches and then Yount made the outstanding catch to rob Murray. The victory gave Milwaukee a 9- 0 start, the third best in American League history, as the Brewers remained the only undefeated team in the major leagues. THE NATIVE of Puerto Rico became the youngest pitcher to throw a no-hitter since Burt Hooton threw one for the Chicago Cubs against Philadelphia on April 16, 1972 at the age of 22 years, 2 months, and 9 days. Nieves is 22 years, three months, and 10 days. The youngest pitcher to hurl a no- hitter was Nick Maddox of Pittsburgh who did it at the age of 20 years, 10 months and 11 days. Nieves rebounded from a disappointing finish to last season when he went 0-8 with an 8.14 earned run average from Aug. 2 through Sept. 27. Kansas City 2, Detroit 1 KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)-Kevin Seitzer, whose hot rookie start has been overshadowed by Bo Jackson, drove in two runs Wednesday night in support of Bret Saberhagen's six-hitter as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Detroit Tigers 2-1. Angel Salazar led off the Kansas City eighth with his second double off Walt Terrell, 1-1, and went to third on an infield out. Seitzer then lined an opposite field double into right to score Salazar and give the Royals a two-game sweep of the Tigers.I Saberhagen, the 1985 Cy Young Award winner who slumped to 7-12 last year, raised his record to 2-0. Saberhagen struck out two and did not issue a walk. Bud Black pitched the ninth for his first save. Tom Brookens, the Tigers' ninth-place hitter, tagged Saberhagen for a triple with one out in the sixth and Lou Whitaker followed with a double for a 1-0 Tigers lead. Whitaker took third on an infield out by Pat Sheridan, but Saberhagen retired Matt Nokes on a grounder to end the inning. The Royals broke through in the bottom of the sixth for a run against Terrell. Salazar led off with a double into the left-field corner and took third when Willie Wilson dropped a single in front of center fielder Chet Lemon. Seitzer, the Royals' rookie first baseman, brought Salazar home with a groundout. H APPY'S TAILn -conversions * relining " hems . zippers 996-2644 Mon.-Fri. 9:30-5:30 Sat. 8.2 313.S.
