4 Page 8-- The Michigan Daily - Thursday, April 16, 1987 Records The Scientists Weird Love Big Time Records America may have won the coveted Cup again, but if Amer - icans were smart they would have left the functionally useless hunk of metal in Australia and hauled the four members of the Scientists back instead. The Scientists provide far more entertainment than any other Australian import conceivable. The Scientist's basic philosophy on their latest product, Weird Love, runs along the lines of "let's play two guitars and do a lot of fuzzy shit to them." Fans of sonic guitar will reach nirvana during the opening cut, "Swampland." A warbling, Duane Eddy-styled rhy - thm guitar gallops along, accented by a lead guitar bleating out intense sixth string notes. The guitars combine to make you believe your speakers have mutated into a giant humming Marshall amp turned up too loud. After this all-out assault, the guitars of Tony Thewlis and Kim Salmon fall into a more regular pattern. The rhythm grunges along, picking up where Robby Krieger left off at the end of "Hello, I Love You," except with more distortion. This provides the backdrop for the lead guitar to scream all over the sustain/feedback map. At times the lead guitar sounds like Australian torpedo planes going in for some imagined run against the Stars and Stripes. Your woofers will also get a fair workout from the somewhat synchronized drum and bass lines that provide another clear backdrop to all the guitar action. All this sound demands a good singer. Kim Salmon comes through with a steady delivery that can unexpectedly careen off on some high notes of his own. The line "There's a hundred headhunters all headed your way / With a hundred different ways they'll make you pay," from "When Fate Deals Its Mortal Blow," proves you don't need a video to enjoy this song. And the Scientists' Ramones-like is evidenced on the hot tune "Atom Bomb Baby" (among other songs), when Salmon describes his girlfriend: "She's a nuclear fission / Burning up my kitchen. " The only drawback to this awesome album is that you may have heard it before. These twelve songs are re-recordings of their "stage favorites," previously available as imports (this LP is on the domestic Big Time label). If you haven't heard the Scientists yet, pick this up and see if you feel like burning up your kitchen. -Brian Jarvinen Michigan Daily ART 763-0379 4 4 Labrec and Rosin star in 'Love Life'. 4 'Love Life'worth reviving By Lauren Schreiber The University Musical Theatre Program just may in fact make mdsical theatre history tonight as they produce Love Life, a collaboration of Alan Jay Lerner (book and lyrics) and Kurt Weill (music). Love Life premiered on Broadway in 1948 and has not been restaged since. The University Philharmonia and students from the I I Cr sports car service of ann arbor. Inc. Ann Arbor's oldest independent import repair shop Taking pride in the quality of our work since 1968 Musical Theatre Program will perform this revival under the direction of Brent Wagner, chairman of the program. According to director Wagner; "Love Life is notable in American musical theatre for several reasons. First, it was the only collaboration of two musical theatre giants, Weill and Lerner. It is also one of the earliest versions of the 'concept' musical (as opposed to the tradi - tional book musical) which in turn led to the creation of such musicals as Company, A Chorus Line, and Cabxret." The musical was conceived by Alan Jay Lerner as a series of songs and variety acts tied together by a story which concerns a young couple, Sam and Susan. Spanning three centuries, from 1791 to 1948, Love Life is a sort of historical look at the relationship of the young couple. "As time passes, Sam and Susan's marriage is tested by social change, women's suffrage, and the UM News in The Daily 764-0552 onset of the industrial revolution in America," explained Wagner. "They do not age, but the world changes around them, highlighting differ - ences in marriage and families withing the past 160 years." Scenes are juxtaposed against vaudeville acts which comment on the action of the scene. This production of Love Life was made possible through a special arrangement with the Kurt Weill Foundation for Music, Inc., and the estate of an Jay Lerner. Lys Symonette, musical assistant to Weill on the original production of Love Life serves as the artistic consultant on the revival. Also involved in the production are conductor Mitchell Krieger, musical director Jerry Depuit, choreographer Tim Millett, and set designer Allison Ford. Love Life takes the stage once again tonight at the Power Center and runs through Sunday. Performances begin at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, and a 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are available at the Michigan League Ticket Office or by phone (764- 0450). Reserved seating is $5 and $8 with student seating available for $3. 4 OPEN 8 A.M.-5:30 P.M. MON .-FRI.
