ARTS Tuesday, April 14, 1987 The Michigan Daily Page 7 'Female Parts': A well done trilogy By Philip Ross In the last, best play of the trilogy Female Parts, the lights come on to show. a woman lying supine on a black platform, her head toward the audience and her legs splayed wide. She groans under the weight of an invisible lover, screams she cannot breathe, complains of her fear of pregnancy and of his indifference to -the problem, and tells him to stop in time. Evidently he does not. She spins around and, in a different tone, addresses an invisible abortionist. She lies down with her legs toward the audience, her legs in imaginary stirrups. "A million lire" she exclaims, and decides to have the baby after all. Fast-forward, and she gives birth; forward once more, and she is telling her daughter a fabulous fairy tale. Called "The Same Old Story," alluding, perhaps, to the song, "As Time Goes By," this play hammered away at the trilogy's theme: Men are brutes and women are their victims. This is hardly new or profound, but so what? In principle, one could make a good play out of even thinner intellectual material; the important thing is that it be engaging. "The Same Old Story" was. It kept the audience off balance, its minimalist set worked, and its variety of characters gave plenty of room to the considerable talents of the solo actress, Patricia Boyette, a member of the theatre department. Particularly effective was her rendition of a foul-mouthed talking doll, whose curses were uttered in a hick Southern accent - an inspired choice. The play also managed to shock, no mean feat today. But simulated copuation is something one still does not expect to see in Ann CLASSIFIED ADS 764-0557 Continued from Previous Page HELP WANTED earn while you Earn this summer.
