Chair Roger Smith is doing some grass-roots campaigning of his own. As head of the No. 1 automaker, Smith has been touring plants and meeting face-to-face with some of the 380,000 workers whose cont - racts are at stake in this summer's negotiations. While visiting the GM plants, Smith shakes hands with line emp - loyees and answers questions on topics ranging.from future products to the lack of profit sharing for hourly workers. Union officials say he has been received cordially at most plants The Michigan Daily -Monday, April 13, 1987 - Page 7 GM chair campaigns before contracttak even if workers don't buy all of his answers. The executive has endured some heckling during his tours, which came on the heels of an announce - ment that GM workers would not get profit-sharing checks due to insufficient earnings by the auto - maker. Those who have met with Smith say he is not there to inspect oper - ations and equipment. GM officials, however, maintain the tours are routine. Jim Sickles, recording secretary for UAW Local 652, said he thinks the tours are aimed at generating support before the negotiations. (AP) - Detroit Edison Co. shut down its Fermi II nuclear plant yesterday of - ter discovering a leak in one of the steam line systems, the utility said. "The plant was totally shut down by 5 p.m. because we had a steam leak in one of the small valves in a steam line system," said Edison spokesperson Dan Vecchi - oni. "Because of where the valve was located, it couldn't be isolated for repairs while the plant was operating." Vecchioni said the plant will be down until "later this week" while the valve is repaired and the cause of the leak is investigated and cor - rected. The leak is not related to an electrical short on Friday which affected two safety systems, forcing Edison to declare a low-level emer - gency and reduce generating power at the plant, he said.
