-,Blackhawks 3-1 last night in
Game 1 of the first round of the
NHL's Norris Division
semifinals.
Klima, who scored 30 goals
during the regular season, put the
Red Wings ahead 1-0 at 3:09 of
the period. Klima, who was fed a
nice lead pass by Adam Oates,
broke around Chicago's defense at
the blue line.
Skating in alone, Klima pulled
Blackhawk's goalie Bob Sauve
out with a fake and flipped the
puck into the empty net.
At 14:54 of the first period,
with Chicago's Keith Brown off
for holding Mel Bridgman, Veitch
cut loose a long slapshot from the
right side, just inside the blue
"line, that sailed over Sauve's right
shoulder for a 2-0 Detroit lead.
Veitch scored 13 goals during the
regular season.
Shawn Burr scored an insurance
goal for the Red Wings at 12:18
of the third period.
Chicago's Bob Murray scored
an unassisted goal with a slapshot
low to Greg Stefan' s glove side
at 10:09 of the third period.

Mike Gartner scored 15 seconds
into the game to touch off a three-

eight minutes as the Capitals
defeated the New York Islanders 4-

playoff series last night.
The Islanders, who trailed 4-1
midway through the final period,
scored on goals by Mike Bossy
and Bryan Trottier, the last at
18:57, to give the Caps a scare.

MONTREAL (AP)-
Defenseman Larry Robinson
ignited a four-goal first period
outburst with his 100th playoff
point, and Mats Naslund notched
one goal and two assists, as the
Montreal Canadiens defeated the
Boston Bruins 6-2 in an opening
game of the NHL's Adams
Division playoffs last night.

The women's softball team
swept a doubleheader from Toledo
yesterday as freshman third baseman
Jenny Allard had the game winning
RBIs in both 1-0 contests.
In what turned out to a beautiful
afternoon to work on the suntan,
Allard provided the only offense for
both teams, going 4-for-4 with
three singles, a double, and two
walks. The freshman improved her
batting average to .316.
In the first game, pitcher
Michelle Bolster went the distance
to improve her record to 5-4 .
Bolster completely shut down the
Toledo offense, striking out four
and limiting the Rockets to two
hits.
THE SECOND GAME was
basically a mirror of the first. The
Wolverines jumped out to a 1-0
lead in the first inning as Allard
singled home Alicia Seegert. Out
followed pitcher Vicki Morrow,
recently named Big Ten player of
p

the week, who promptly let the
crowd back to the sunrays. Morrow
scattered five hits in the complete
game effort, and improved her
record to 7-4.
The Wolverine offense was only
a little more exciting than Toledo's,
settling for eight hits on the
afternoon.
Coach Carol Hutchins is
concerned about her team's lack of
production at the plate. "Our
defense is improving, but our
offense is still a sore spot," she
said.
"We're finally starting to hit the
ball, but we not nearly as aggresive
as we should be," Hutchins said.
"Allard is a great hitter and she's
finally starting to come around. I
hope it rubs off on the rest of the
team."
The victories were the
Wolverines' fourth and fifth in their
last six games. The team travels to
Minneapolis this weekend for an
important series with the Big Ten
leading Minnesota Gophers.

Senior Vicki Morrow delivers her five hit, 1-0, shutout in the second game
of yesterday's doubleheader against Toledo. Morrow, recently named
Big Ten player of the week, helped the Wolverines improve their record
to 13-8 after the two-game sweep. The Wolverines, who have won five of
their last six games, travel to Minneapolis this weekend.
