"It shows how men seem incapable of seeing things from a woman's point of view," said John Russell Brown, the director of the drama department's new troupe. "I would say it would be difficult for a man to see the plays without changing his consciousness, es- pecially the last play." The plays were written in Italian by Dario Fo, whom Brown called "an extraordary Italian clown and actor," and his wife, Franca Rame, an actress who works in Milan. This translation, by Olwen Wy- production has an economy of per- sonnel and a simplicity of design suitable to a touring company of modest means. "Many of the or- dinary things you expect to find on a stage are missing - including the other actors," he said. Patricia Boyette plays all the roles, slipping into male roles whenever necessary. She can be expected to turn this imposed flexibility to comedic ad- vantage by making fun of sex roles and perhaps of sex itself. "It's out - rageous, at least in parts," said Brown, who hinted at bawdy bits but would not provide a sample. The comedies are set in modern Italy, a cultural distance perhaps great enough to free our minds from in understanding." In the next year to 18 months, Brown said, Michigan Orbit Theatre will choose "three or four" plays which, like Female Parts, fea- ture compact casts and fold-up sets. "It has to be small-scale because it will have to travel to different lo- cations in the back of a van." The troupe's members, all from the de- partment of theatre and drama, will work together for 28 weeks a year, which Brown said is enough time to build a repertoire that travels well. Female Parts opens tonight at the Trueblood Theatre in the Frieze Building. Performances continue April 10-12 and 16-19. Thursday Passport Photos kinko'ls Great copies. Great people.
