The Wolverines lost three of four games this weekend by a combined five runs at the Wheaties Tournament of Champions in Minneapolis. Sophomore Kourtney Thompson was one of the few bright spots for the team as he went Six for 11, with two home runs, two doubles, and seven runs batted in. Michigan will need good play this week to get its confidence back before the conference season. "I THINK it's certainly imnportant for us to start winning," said Michigan assistant coach IDanny Hall. "We're looking forward to being back home and putting everything together for this weekend when we play Purdue." The Wolverines will have to play against Wayne State without some of their top players, however. to see action. Michigan will be hoping to get healthy with a sweep of the Division II Tartars, but Wayne State head coach Angelo Gust has different ideas. "We're not coming over there to lose two games," said Gust, the father of former Michigan player Chris Gust. Gust will throw his best pitcher, Rich Wood, in the first game and either Michael Butler or Steve DuCharme in the second. Earlier this season, Butler and DuCharme, both left-handers, threw back-to- back no-hitters against Concordia Tartar College. The Tartars, 13-4, rely mostly on their offensive attack led by first baseman Kevin Schwanz (.442, three home runs, 14 RBIs). Outfielders Ken Berezinski and Craig Pasini each have three home runs and second baseman Craig Romine is hitting .359. While Gust believes his team has a good chance to win, he expects to see a talented Wolverine club. "I know them as well as I know my own team. They have good defense, good pitching, and they hit well," said Gust. H agler -Leonard battle through 9 From staff reports Last night's fight between Marvelous Marvin Hagler and Sugar Ray Leonard continued through round ten last night at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nev. No winner had been determined at press time. Leonard appeared to take the early advantage in the fight, schedualed for 12 rounds, which started at 11:13 EDT. Both fighters seemed to feel each other out early in the fight, but Leonard appeared to frustrate Hagler. Hagler came back a little in the third round, but not enough to win the round according to those at ringside. Leonard tired as the fight progressed, however. Hagler landed numerous punches to the challenger and seemed to take control of the middle rounds. Leonard resorted to tactics that made him so sucessful prior to his retirement in 1984, taunting Hagler and moving all around the ring. Thompson . .. hot hitter Pitchers Mike Grimes, Jim Abbott, and Chris Lutz pitched over th;e weekend and will see no more than limited action against the Tartars, while outfielder Eddie Woolwine and shortstop Doug Kaiser are also doubtful because of injuries. Mike Ignasiak, 2-3, is the probable Michigan starter for the first game and any combination of pitchers may throw in the second. R oss Powell, Tim Lata, John Grettenberger are likely candidates SPORTS OF THE DAILY: Men linksters left out in cold CLASFE D Continued from Previous Page GOIN G PL ACES LKING FOR SOMEONE TO DRIVE
