LIBERTY 668-299 Records Bruce S p ringsteen and the E Street Band Live/1975-85 Columbia Springsteen's live album isn't just another album; it's an event. It's probably the recording event of the year. The five records would be worth talking about if for no other reason than that it finally makes Spring - steen's justly lauded live perfor - mances available to the general public. But, this album is more than just a chronicle. With it, Columbia affirms what has become obvious in the last few years: Springsteen has written and performed the finest rock music in America for over a full decade. American rock, from Elvis SPresley to Bob Dylan to Bruce Springsteen, has always been pro - 1 pelled by dynamic individuals, in contrast to England's tendency to produce great rock bands. Springsteen established himself as the legitimate heir to that tradition by watching the world with the eyes of a poet and talking about it in the language of the street; by learning from his immediate predecessors what it means to be an icon and then abdicating the power; and by ex - osing the hopelessness of his culture while still loving and celebrating it. In songs like "Born to Run" and "Rosalita" he created standards for a second generation of rock audiences, and in ones like "Johnny 99" and "Born in the U.S.A." he offered a view of America that too few of his fans consider seriously enough. The selections here are all superb. True, the producers might have included more unreleased material, might have offered some samples from before 1975, and might have exchanged some ver - sions here for others, but it would be hard to part with anything al - ready here. With as much material as Springsteen has to draw from, it's inevitable that somebody's favorites will be left out. It has been easy in the last two years to mistake radio's overplay for Springsteen's decline. He remains America's first citizen of rock and roll even as he steps into middle age. This album is ample testimony to that fact. -Joseph Kraus BORDERING ON OBNOXIOUS HARRIS TRUST & SAVINGS BANK CHICAGO, ILLINOIS will host a presentation on January 15, from 5 - 7 p.m. in the Pendleton Room of the Michigan Union.
