The Blues, who trailed the Red Wings by seven points just eight days earlier, went 4-1-0 over their last five games to win the title by a single point over the Red Wings, who needed only a tie in one of their last three games take the title. Detroit, which lost its last three games and five of its last six, finished with a 34-35-11 record and 78 points, second in the division. THE BLUES finished 32-33- Blues, 3-2 15, good for 79 points. In their 20-year history, the Blues now have finished first in their division six times. The Red Wings, a once-proud franchise, haven't won a title in the last 22 years. Ramage's goal, his 11th of the season, came on a rebound of a screen shot by Gino Cavallini. The Blues grabbed a 2-1 lead with goals 28 seconds apart by Doug Gilmour in the first minute of the third period. Gilmour scored his 31st goal on a power play 22 seconds into the period, extending his scoring streak to nine games on his first shot of the game Moore, Rose capture conference titles By JULIE HOLLMAN Although the gymnastics Big Ten team championships looked like a three-ring circus without the elephants, a very defined order of superiority emerged from it as Ohio State edged out Iowa by only five-tenths of a point for the conference title Friday night at Crisler Arena. Michigan placed sixth out of the field of seven. The maize and blue was severely tarnished in the team competition, but senior Mitch Rose and junior Scott Moore managed to polish back the shine by earning individual Big Ten titles Saturday night. Rose recaptured his1985 title in the still rings with a 9.65 routine. "This is the icing on the cake," said Rose. "I wouldn't have been upset if I hadn't won it though, because I don't put a great deal of weight on an individual event like this," While Rose was swinging to victory on the rings, Moore was hurling to the winner's circle on the vault. Moore successfully defended his 1986 crown by edging out Michigan State's Keith Pettit by one-tenth of a point despite some unpredictable scoring from the judges. "I was relieved when I saw my score because the scoring had been pretty inconsistent. I was upset with the judges (Friday night) but luckily they gave me a good score." BROCK ORWIG also qualified for Michigan in the parallel bars and the rings but had an off night and only managed fifth place on the bars. The big winner of the night was Minnesota's Collin Godkin who dazzled the crowd when he turned in a 9.9 parallel bars routine en route to the individual title. During his winning performance, one judge gave Godkin the only 10 of the competition and the only 10 given in Crisler Arena this year. After the parallel bars, Godkin moved immediately to the high bar where he again received a 9.9. This score made Godkin the only double title winner of the championship. In the team competition, four teams fought hard for the crown as Ohio State, Iowa, Minnesota, and Illinois finished no more than two-tenths apart from each other. The Buckeyes stole back theirl985 title from the Hawkeyes by winning the floor exercise, the parallel bars, and the still rings, while Iowa could only tie for first in the vault with Minnesota and win the high bar. Michigan finished in a solid sixth, two points ahead of Wisconsin. 'M' goes 1-3 From staff reports the Michigan baseball team defeated 5th-ranked UCLA this weekend, but lost all three of its, other contests as the Wolverines finished 1-3 in the Wheaties Tournament at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis. The Wolverines lost to Maine, Minnesota, and the Cuban National Team to drop their record to 15-5. On Saturday, Jim Abbott limited UCLA to one run, and Phil Price. and Kourtney Thompson each added two-run singles in the sixth inning to lift the Wolverines to a 4-1 victory. ABBOTT struck out six and walked two while improving his record to 3-1, and outpitched the Bruins' All-American pitcher, Al Sanchez. Sanchez shut out Michigan until the sixth inning when he was taken out with the bases loaded. - Bill *enrick relieved Sanchez and gave up a single to Price, an intentional in tourney walk, and another bases loaded single to Thompson for all the Wolverines' runs. Greg Everson relieved Abbott to get the final out. After defeating the Bruins, Michigan had a letdown Saturday night, losing to Minnesota, 8-5. Thompson was the spark for the team again as he hit a three-run homer. Yesterday, the Wolverines were limited to one hit and lost in eight innings to the Cuban National Team, 2-1. Chris Lutz pitched seven strong innings, only giving up one run, but John Grettenberger took the loss after giving up the winning run in the eighth. Thompson hit a home run for Michigan's only run of the day. The sophomore had an excellent weekend as he hit two doubles, two home runs, and had seven runs batted in. The Wolverines began the tournament Friday night with a 4-3 loss to Maine. Mike Ignasiak took the loss after giving up three runs in the sixth inning. ov '0ri GUS'S PIZZERIA 310 MAYNARD - (INSIDE DOOLEY'S) 665-5800 D f4 5 Y ~,0 s'°" S ' X-LARGE 16" PIZZA with 3 items AND 2 QUARTS OF POP $6m99 Piustax Daily Photo by GRACE TSAI Brock Orwig performs on the still rings this weekend in the Big Ten Championships at Crisler Arena CO-ED Ch-eerleading* PRACTICE April 7-8, 6:30-8:30 TRYOUTS April 9-10, 6:30-8:30 At the Colisieum * 8Women and 4 Men * * to be selected * For more information call 763-2159 Be Our Gues at The University of Michigan-Dearborn Students in good academic standing are invited to take advantage of spring and summer by enrolling in course- work at our easily accessible campus.
