I Page 8 - The Michigan Daily - Monday, AprilI6, 1987 Books The Propheteers By Max Apple Harper & Row $7.95 What do Howard Johnson, Margery Merriweather Post, and Walt Disney have in common? They are all characters in Hopwood ,winner Max Apple's latest novel, The Propheteers - a continuation of his parody of American popular culture begun in an earlier novel, The Oranging of America. Both Apple's style and plot are simple; it is his detailed character sketches that make this novel successful. His descriptions brim with candor and humor. Howard Johnson appears as an eccentric ice cream guru who tours the United States, searching for new Hojo lo - cations. If he found a promising spot, "Mr. HJ would mark the spot with his rine or break some of the :layey earth in his strong pink hands, sifting it like flour for a delicate recipe." His faithful fol - lower, Mildred Bryce, remembers that "she had actually seen him chew the grass, getting down on all fours like an animal ..." But Howard isn't the only odd millionaire. Margery Merriweather Post, daughter of C.W. Post and heiress of his fortune, is bored with her life in Battle Creek, Michigan, and longs for adventure. She marries James Merriweather, an ambassador to the Soviet Union, and travels with him to Moscow, expecting excitement but finding what she left behind in Michigan- "In her daydreams, Margery began to think of the world as composed of snow and corn. She had seen enough of each to last a lifetime, and she was only twenty-five years old." However, Apple's portrait of Walt Disney shows the negative side of capitalistic success. Walt's best animated characters are created at the times of his greatest depression. Bambi grew out of Walt's obsession with death: "Everyday he went to the beach ... then he waded out into the Pacific. He thought of the salmon swimming upstream, looking for just the right place to die. And then one afternoon he put his trousers on right over his swim trunks and went to the studio ... his right hand was drawing a cloven hoof and then four straight legs with knobby knees. He was still thinking of a salmon's death, but he was drawing deer after deer, and pretty soon there was a name, 'Bambi,' and not long after that came Pinocchio so it turned into a good season and he almost forgot what it felt like when he was walking into the ocean." These three characters meet in Orlando, where Will Disney, the marketing force behind Walt, is determined to develop a new and improved Disneyland. It is here that Apple's parody of capitalism hits home. Apple's final scene succeeds not only in providing an interesting climax but also in evoking the issue of the novel- does material success bring happiness? While the final episode is memorable, the trip there is as fun as Space Mountain, with passengers such as Salvador Dali, John F. Kennedy, and Clarence Birdseye of Birdseye Foods. Apple writes a funny, entertaining story which shows American capitalism at its best and worst. -Lisa Magnino How will the wolf survive? Daily Photo by GRACE TSAI Quite nicely thank you.
