In step with DANCE

By Jose-Arturo Martinez
It was just the normal state
affairs...well, almost. Godzilla
came by for a cameo appearance,
Tokyo once again underwent its
annual urban renewal, the service at
Greg's Cafe' was as good as ever,
and the dancing was hot!
What am I talking about? Why
just the normal goings on over at
the Music School's McIntosh Thea -
tre, Saturday night. The combined
BFA, MFA dance concert this
weekend, Patterson, Weiser, Grad
and Thornton, DANCE came off,
despite some interruptions from
Mother Nature, rather well.
"Dust to Dust" proved to be the
single, funniest work of the con -
cert. A'solo choreographed for and
by joy Grad had her cavorting
through the forests as a number of
reptiles. At times she seemed like a

lumbering creature, perhaps a Bron -
tosaurus searching the tree tops for
food. At other times, she was a
smaller, more agile creature scam -
pering back and forth. Grad fulfilled
her character extremely well and as
mentioned earlier, Godzilla did
make a guest appearance, and he
was as forceful as ever.
For raw energy "After Hours",
Jennifer Weiser's group work chor -
eographed to the music of the 'Dir -
ty Dozen Brass Band' made for a
rousing close to the show. Gregory
Patterson, Brad Appleton and Van
D. Knoxx III portrayed three fel -
lows out for a good time at the
club. All attempt to show up each
other and maintain that air of cool
that is so vital. The rag time mus -
ic, Fedora's double- breasted suits
and spats gave the piece its Roaring
Twenties feel. Appleton, Knoxx
and Paterson made for a formidable
trio and a rousing routine.
"She Who", was Patterson's

group work that took a more ser -
ious approach to portrayal of sub -
ject matter than his earlier, "Wait -
ing My Turn". Patterson and.
Marsha Pabalis are probably the
best male-female combination cur -
rently at the Dance School. "She
Who", has Pabalis as a central
'womyn' character dealing with a
traditionally oriented society, and
how women can help each other to
attain independence.
Tracy Thornton's character, in
her solo Mysteria Magica, was an
eerie Priestess that proceeded to
weave a spell over the audience.
Featuring music by Andreas Vol-
lenweider, and a set seemingly bare -
ly lit by a dozen candles set on the
stage space, she cleverly used the
spotlight to impart snippets of
movement to the audience remin -
iscent of a voodoo dance. Thorn -
ton's character gobbled up the and -
ience with her vivid eyes and snarl
and drew them into her influence.
