The South University movie theater was sold on Dec. 30 and its new owners plan to convert the building into a shopping center. The former owners of the Campus Theatre, George Kerasotes, Inc., refused to comment on the closing, but University Communication Prof. Frank Beaver speculated that low quality and a single screen caused the theater's demise. Business has never been better for area theaters, according to Beaver, but the Campus Theatre was deserted by many of its former patrons. The theater was once known for showing "provocative, outstanding films," Beaver said. "This reputation of being an art theater was responsible for the frequent long lines that used to wrap around the corner," he said. Kerasotes purchased the movie house in 1984 - along with the State and Wayside theaters - and began by firing the projectionists. The projectionists' union picketed the theater and was joined by patrons. Beaver said the incident demonstrated that Kerasotes "did not care about the theater." The Campus Theatre's sole screen prevented it from quickly Ethiopian plane crash kills 54 LONDON (AP) - An Ethiopian air force plane carrying 54 passengers and crew crashed in the Eritrean provincial capital of Asmara yesterday and killed everyone on board, the official Radio reported. According to the report on the official Ethiopian Radio, monitored in London by the British Broadcasting Corp., the crash was due to a mechanical failure. rotating its features and hurt its attendance, Beaver said. The building was purchased by Campus Commercial Properties, Inc., which owns the buildings that house Steve's Ice Cream on State Street and Taco Bell on East University. Glen Gale, operator of the corporation, said he hopes to create a shopping mall in the space with "exciting apparel and retail merchants." He also hopes to connect the building with the Church Street parking structure. Gale hopes to begin remodeling within the next three months, and open stores shortly after construction is completed. He feels there is a need for a variety of stores on South University, and wants to counter the increasing number of restaurants there. "We want to add to the tenant mix and revitalize the area," he said. Gov. Rafael Hernandez Colon has said tense labor-management relations may have been a motive for the fire, but he did not blame the Teamsters union - which had planned a strike for midnight New Year's Eve - or hotel management or non-Teamster employees. Teamsters officials denied any involvement in the fire. They noted they have cooperated with investigators and that the union offered a $15,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of anyone involved in setting the fire. JORGE Farinacci Garcia, a union lawyer from Puerto Rico facing trial in Hartford, Conn., in connection with the $7 million robbery of a Wells Fargo truck in 1983, said he did not know Escudero Aponte. , MassMeeting THURSDAY, JANUARY 15 8:30 PM PENDLETON ROOM MICHIGAN UNION ACTORS, WRITERS, TECHNICAL & PRODUCTION ASSISTANTS NEEDED K I I r-;2 ON Old main could face demolition " for more info, call 763-11,07, (Continued from Page 1) year to maintain." NEITHER Zuidema nor Regent Thomas Roach (D-Saline) have definite plans for the site, but both mentioned that it could be used for parking. "Ultimately, we have to look at the use of the site for the next 10 to 20 years and beyond," said Zuidema. "We have no plans for its use right now." The buildings named for demolition under the proposal include the main "y-winged" building, the surgery wing, the Apple to, announce new line, experts say (Continued from Page 1) new computers are developed, software is designed for the new systems, and is usually not compatible with the older models. Even if the program could run on the older model, it would not be very efficient," he said. Nicholas also suggested that Apple might not want to maintain two production lines and is therefore offering Macintosh Pluses at low costs in order to clear out their stock. Apple is cooperating with the University to provide Macintosh Pluses to students, faculty, and staff at significantly reduced prices in the Computer Weekend in February. The deadline for buying a computer through the program is Friday. "It's now or never to sell their Mac Pluses. In a month, it will be all over. Apple is selling computers cheaply to students all over the World," said Rose. THE fate of the administrative wing - the small building directly in front of the main hospital - is uncertain. It is considered a possible location for the current occupants of the Clinical Faculty Office Building, which would be razed under the proposal. Roach wants the administrative building saved if it is economically feasible because he sees it as "a focal point and a landmark. It's a visual point for the end of the street (Observatory)." The demolition of Old Main follows a so-called "master plan" for renovating the Medical Campus. Approved in January 1979, the plan cited numerous deficiencies in the building, calling it "seriously obsolete and incapable of meeting the increasing demands placed on a modern hospital." "Although considered modern and up-to-date when constructed," the plan said, "it lacks certain amenities which are basic and minimum requirements for hospitals." Guess who's playing doctor?
