OPINION Page 4 Wednesday, January 14, 1987 The Michigan Contragate will inspire How exactly will Contragate end? Will 1988 come early for George Bush, who takes office as Ronald Reagan resigns in disgrace? Will Ronald Reagan become the Richard Nixon of the 1980s? Dov Cohen Will Oliver North become the G. Gordon Liddy of the '80s save the pyromania? Will the American public even get a decent TV miniseries out of this whole scandal? The answers at this point are unknown. However, one can make some reasonable guesses. One doubts whether the President will be tried or impeached over this scandal, except by the students at Brown University. Liberals, who for the past 6 years have contended Reagan doesn't know a thing about what goes on in his own White House, are hoping the President had shown at least a modicum of interest in this affair. They are likely to be disappointed, however. It is probable the President knew as much about this matter as he does about any other - that is, next to nil. The conservatives, in the end, may have the last laugh. "There's no conspiracy here," they can say. "Reagan didn't break the law. He was just ignorant and irresponsible. So there." Aside from this, a disturbing trend has become apparent during this whole scandal. It seems Poetic Justice has decided to exact retribution on the organs and body parts of persons. who have offended it. Reagan is a prime example. His swaggering machismo show-em- your-a-man attitude got us into this whole situation. And then a prostate problem struck him. It seems he received slight discomfort in his swaggering machismo everytime he tried to use it. (Of course, other members of the administration must be on guard against this poetic justice plague. Will Ed Meese, who has made some of the most asinine statements ever to come out of the White House, be struck with "Hoof in Mouth" disease? Or will chief brown- noser George Bush come down with "mono-rhoids" - a strange and exotic mutation combining strains of the kissing disease and hemorrhoids?) Besides the impending medical crisis, there will be another result of Contragate. Somebody is going to get a good book out of this whole deal. This shows a lack of concern both-for the newspaper and for the students in general. The Res Gestae had had its office in Hutchins Hall. Because of an influx of new faculty and a general office space crunch in the Law School, the Res Gestae was sent packing. This decision may not have been completely unfair: certainly in administratively allo - cated space, faculty come before students. The administration argued that the Res Gestae could move to offices set aside for student organizations which the Law School Student Senate allocates. Because of the short notice, however, the Senate had to move four groups into one office to make room for the newspaper. Some groups were not aware of changes being made since the controversy took place during finals when most law students were busy studying. Associate Dean Susan Eklund said the newspaper received such late notice only because the adminstration was trying to find a way not to remove the newspaper. This does not explain why the administration was unable to in - form the newspaper that changes were being considered. At the meeting at which the Res Gestae was new office space Senate Secretary Jeff Winnick expressed justifiable anger that such short notice had been given to the paper. In the future the Law School administration should give the students adequate notice before evicting them from office space. To the Daily: Mark Kulkis' article "New femminists attack men too much" (Dailiy, 11/19/86) reveals an astounding lack of awareness and undersanding of the femminist movement. Mr. Kulkis explains to us that there are two divisions of femminism, "old" and "new". The "old femminists" he describes are endurable because they knew better than to challenge social structures which enable rape culture to exist. They also had the good sense not to reveal anger at their oppression. Mr. Kulkis depicts "new femminists" as those who "rail against rape culture" and who, he mis- takenly believes, are motivated by a basic desire to persecute men. Ironically, Mr. Kulkis expresses a great deal of anger himself toward the anger he does not understand and consequently feels should not exist. In reference to the incident aat the Illinois football gaame, where a blow up sex doll was passed around , Mr. Kuljkis was outraged.-that not everyone could see that "it's always fun to pass objects around, be they beach balls or dolls." The trouble arises with people who have trouble making the differentiation between these objects aand women. For those culture, for any in doubt that we are part of one: a women is raped every seven minutes, a women is battered every 18 seconds, rape within marriage is not illegal in Michigan (or in many other states), more than one out of every three girls will be sexually abused before age 18 and only two percent of reported rapes will result in arrest. Mr. Kulkis feels that Condone ne To The Daily: Lately, there have been some rumors flying around this campus that the Coalition for Democracy in Latin America secretly supports the Nicara - guan rebels trying to topple the Marxist Sandinista Govern - ment of Nicaragua. At this moment the integrity of the Nicaraguan rebels is in question due to their abuses of human rights and the sources of their finances for their combat operations. But, what must be stressed about the coalition is that, unlike other organizations on campus, it has various view -
