Junior Jim Agemy was a big y question mark after being sidelined for most of the 1986 campaign with arm troubles, Chris Lutz was still fighting a bout with mono - nocleosis, and the coach had a host of young and inexperienced freshmen on the mound. Yesterday, those fans who managed to brave subarctic temperatures saw two of those rookies step forth to relieve Middaugh of some of his worries, leading Michigan to two wins, 4-1 and 6-1, in a doubleheader against Bowling Green. Ross Powell pitched five and one-third innings in the opener, giving up two hits and allowing one unearned run, while his frosh teammate Tim Lata went five innings, giving up no runs and striking out eight. Quite impressive numbers for two pitchers who both gained their first collegiate wins. "IT'S NICE to know that you have a couple of freshmen that can go out and throw like they did today," Middaugh said. "Powell pitched well. His problem was the long innings in between. "Lata really threw well, also. That forkball he throws is a tough pitch and he was getting his fastball and curve over the plate. He really helped us in the second game. I'm very happy with their performances, being freshmen and against an experienced club like Bowling Green." That experience, however, failed to shine through on the bitter cold afternoon. The Falcons committed ten errors, five in each game. Two of those enabled Michigan to break 1-1 games wide open. In the opener, after Kourtney Thompson walked, shortstop Tim Hatem booted Darrin Campbell's grounder enabling the Wolverines to put runners on first and second. Jim Durham, who opened the game hitting .652, singled to left to capitalize on the Bowling Green mishap. FALCON PITCHER Chuck Steward then promptly threw a pick off attempt into center field, allowing Campbell to move to third. From there, fleet-footed center fielder Greg McMurtry drove him home with a sacrifice fly, putting Michigan up, 3-1. akes two Greg Everson came on to pitch the final inning and two-thirds to record his first save. In the second game, with the score knotted at one in the second inning, Chris Gagin hit his fifth double of the year. He moved to third on a passed ball and scored on an error to third baseman Todd Dues. That run would be the only other run the Wolverines would need, as Lata's pitching took command of the game. "It feels great to get the first win," Lata said. "All of my pitches were working today. The defense played well and we got some runs. It's been a long time since I won a game. Not since high school days." It might appear that Middaugh can finally breathe a sigh of relief, except that his team has to travel to Western Michigan today for a tough doubleheader. "I'm concerned about Western," he said. "I can't pitch who I want to pitch because Iggy (Mike Ignasiak) pitched Saturday and (Jim) Abbott Sunday. To bring them back (today) would be too fast. Two years ago we went into Western with an awful good club and lost a doubleheader because of the same reasons."
