The Michigan Daily - Monday, March 30, 1987 - Page 9 Beecher, Nouvel state champs By WALTER KOPF Flint Beecher was determined not to let the Class B title slip away like it did last year when Buena Vista's Chris Coles shot a 54-footer at the buzzer to win. The Bucs won their second title in three years with a 41-32 victory over Alma. Beecher coach Moses Lacey stressed patience, poise and strong defense as the keys to winning, but during the first three quarters, the Bucs had problems with Alma's down-tempo style. Alma stayed close for most of the game by waiting for inside men Dave Modders and Todd Slater to get open and push in lay-ups. Modders had a team-high eight points, as Alma had trouble scoring from the outside. ALMA coach Bill Kooiman only played six players, relying on experience. Lacey, however, used many different combinations of his young squad (which starts only one senior) to wear the Panthers down. In the fourth quarter, quick buckets by Beecher's Aaron McFadden and Ernest Stewart caused Alma to rush its poised style. The Panthers rushed their poised inside game with weak outside shots, allowing Beecher to run away in the fourth quarter. Anthony Harris sealed the Bucs' win with a slam dunk to extend the lead to 39-28 with one minute left. McFadden and Stewart each scored a game-high twelve points and center John Boyton had three blocks. IN THE FOURTH quarter Beecher finally played the style that brought them a 24-3 season record. "(Lacey) told us to tighten up on defense, and run the ball, because that's the way we've won all year," said Beecher's Demetrius Venerable. "They started missing their jump shots and had a hard time on the inside," said Earnest Stewart. "And that's all we needed." In seven tournament games, Beecher, which produced college- bound stars such as Roy Marble, allowed an average of 39.1 points per game. "Anytime you win a championship, you've got to play good defense,",said Lacey. Nouvel 72, Benzie 59 It would have been appropriate for Saginaw Nouvel to have worn magicians' hats during its Class C championship game Saturday night, as the Panthers brought out all their tricks to beat Benzie Central 72-59 at Crisler Arena. Behind-the-back passes, blocked shots, reverse lay-ups, and slam dunks helped Nouvel daze the Huskies. Nouvel coach Jim Caribeo credited Ward with giving the team the emotional lift it needed to overcome Benzie. N O U V E L'S Corey Phillips , and Paul Leek each added 16 and Benzie's Rex Vanduzen was the game's high scorer with 20. "We played well enough to win, I guess," said Caribeo. "I think our kids underestimated (Benzie) a little. We scrimmaged them at Christmas and they kicked our tails. I don't know why they wouldn't now." Unfortunately for his Huskies, Benzie coach Will Lynch had the answer to that question along with the key to the game. "We couldn't stop Corey Phillips. He just destroyed our press," said Lynch. "Also, when we scrimmaged them at Christmas, they didn't take it to the basket. Shame on them for not doing the same thing." Nouvel maintained a small lead throughout the first quarter, taking a 16-13 lead into the second. Benzie pulled ahead by one in the second period with a quick basket and two free throws. But Nouvel came back and sank a lay-up and a jump shot to recapture the lead for good. BOTH TEAMS came out pressing in the second half and ignited a fast-paced game, but the scoring for Benzie was slow. After a bucket to open up the third quarter, the Huskies ran into a drought and didn't score for the next three minutes. Benzie regained offensive power behind Rex Vanduzen and rattled off seven unanswered points to draw within six. But Nouvel stretched its lead back to nine by the end of the quarter. At the 2:22 mark of the fourth period, Nouvel ran off six straight points to bring the score to 68-53 and close the door for good. "We knew we would get a few spurts and as long as we had the lead we would win," said Caribeo. This title marked Caribeo's first after losing in the finals last year. -JULIE HOLLMAN LSAT GMAT GRE MCAT Evening and weekend classes. Guarantee: Score in the top 25% or take the next course free.
