The Comets defeated the Snowbirds of Gaylord St. Mary's 56-46, completing the only undefeated season in Michigan high school basketball this year. THE SHOOTING of the two teams reflected their nicknames and did much to dictate the game's outcome. The Comets were hot, hitting 50 percent from the field. Bryan Eisenga paced McBain with 16 points. Mike Heuker added 14 and Andy Systema 12 on six-of- eight shooting. The Snowbirds were icy, meanwhile, finishing at a paltry 41 percent. Paul Grange, the team's season scoring leader with 22 points per game, was held to eight points, all in the second half. A 10-2 spurt by McBain to open the second half broke open a five- point game. St. Mary's closed to 49-45 with 1:51 left in the game but could get no closer. 4 Spartans get Sioux-ed Associated Press Michigan State goalie Bob Essensa (right) looks on in disgust as North Dakota celebrates its third goal Saturday night at Joe Louis Arena.
