The Michigan Daily- Monday, March 30, 1987-Page 5 POLICE NOTES Fire The Ann Arbor Fire Department is investigating yesterday's early morning fire in East Quad. Captain Norm Herbert said two trash cans were set ablaze outside rooms on second floor Hayden and basement Cooley. No suspects have been identified and Herbert said the Fire Prevention investigators have been called to investigate. Arson is } suspected. Accident A University bus was hit by a Plymouth Voyager van Friday morning as the bus approached North Campus, according to Dir - ector of University Public Safety Leo Heatley. The Ann Arbor Fire Dept. is unsure about the cause of the collision, which occurred at the intersection of Bonisteel and Glacier Road. Acting Fire Lt. Jim Wallace Qsaid none of the bus' passengers were hurt, but three occupants of the other vehicle were taken to University Hospital. Two of the three had multiple lacerations to their face; one was treated for leg ,;injuries and a possible broken w wrist, as well as shock. The third V ictim was treated for possible internal injuries. Hospital officials refused to discuss the injuries, but said two of the injured had been I WCBN to address racism during week-long series By LOUIS STANCATO To bring about better understanding of racism at the University, student-run FM radio station WCBN will air a week-long series on the topic, beginning tonight at 6:00 p.m. According to Des Preston, a former University student and WCBN talk show host and commentator, a look at the immorality of racism is not en- ough. "Only through a realistic under- standing of how racism operates in societies through history can we understand current racism in its perspective," Preston said. WCBN is running the series as a community service, in hopes that the current tension surrounding campus racism may be directed towards the more subtle, unknown aspects of the problem, according to Preston. Preston said the station is not running the series as a University affiliate, or because the station is affiliated with WJJX-AM, which was closed in February after it broadcasted phoned-in racist jokes. WCBN has always addressed minority issues, and will continue to do so, Preston said. The five one-hour segments will be open discussions, with each night's guest speaking on a different aspect of racism. Barbara Ransby of the United Coalition Against Racism, and Wayne State University English Prof. Michael Bell have agreed to speak on two of the segments. Preston, former student Rick Whealey, and LSA student Rick Titsworth will host the segments. Each segment will focus on a complex analysis of racism in general, including international and domestic racial conflicts. In one segment, Whealey hopes to explore the "prankish and immature" aspects of racism surrounding ethnic jokes and stereotypes. Other shows will deal with the psychology, history and social aspects of racism. People stopped to get a look at the owl which remained atop the building all day. Hackers wreak havoc at (Continued from Page 1) The employees at the Public Health computing center began erasing these pictures after a user sent a message through the Mich- igan Terminal System message board to all the computing centers regarding the picture's offensiv- eness. Masten then sent word to her employees to contact her if the picture was found, in order to erase the pictures. Fewer than ten specific incidents have been reported to her office, she said. MASTEN said the computing centers are unable to protect the MacWrite disks from being tam- pered with, but if this continues to be a problem, they will have to implement costly countermeasures. To prevent user tampering with start-up disks, Masten said that the monitors would have to erase and recopy the start-up disks each time they are turned in. She said she is very reluctant to do this because it would be extremely costly in replacement software and staff salaries. Thinking about a possible perpetrator, Masten said, "One would need a high amount of computer knowledge to copy the start-up picture on the MacWrite disks," and the reason that there have only been a few isolated 'omputing incidents is probably because it took a great effort and a considerably long time to do. She said the start-up picture of Shields could have been obtained through national networks via MTS. Stan Tsao, a monitor at the school of Public Health computing center, said, "In order to put (the picture) on the screen, one must be a professional computer programmer or at least very centers knowledgable about computers and software." Generally, monitors do not have the knowledge to be capable of putting this start-up picture on the disks, Tsao said. But engineering sophomore Bjorn Gustafsson, a Macintosh user at the Public Health computing center, disagrees. "Anyone with a basic knowledge of a Macintosh could have put the picture on the disks," Gustafsson said. released. -by Steve Blonder i The Calendar of The University of Michigan Arab-Amer Univ Grads--Lec, P Findley, "The Role of the Israeli Lobby in U.S. Foreign Policy," 7:30 pm, Aud, Lorch Hall. 769-2776,764-5011.
