Indiana defeated Michigan 85-84 in one of the greatest losses in recent Michigan history. Indiana guard Steve Alford sank a running five-footer that bounded high off the rim and gently fell through with 00:1 left to give the Hoosiers the victory. The Wolverines had scrapped back from a 19-point deficit, eventually taking the lead, 84-83, on a Gary Grant free throw with driven the baseline and was out of control when Hoosier Steve Eyl hit him. The Michigan junior guard sank the first free throw but missed the second, which was rebounded by Hoosier Daryl Thomas (22 points), giving Indiana a chance to win. "IT WAS A a situation where Daryl got the rebound to me," said Alford. "I knew I had the shot. I knew they didn't want to foul me because most of the time it's two points the easy way without the clock moving." The incredible Michigan comeback was keyed by senior guard Garde Thompson (20 points). second-half three-pointers and grabbed three clutch rebounds during the crucial stretch. Indiana led 73-58 with just over eight minutes left, when the Wolverines came alive. Seven quick points, keyed by Grant's defense and Michigan's effective transition game, cut the defecit to eight at 73-65. Michigan's tenacious work on Indiana's guards continued to create turnovers giving Thompson the chance to hit a 23- foot prayer, slicing the Indiana edge to 80-74 with 3:50 left. Eyl, who scored just nine points but caused trouble for the Wndi.nn..Q w inr the oc c al night, drew a foul on Michigan center Mark Hughes, the sophomore's fifth, with 3:34 to play. Joe Hillman sank the first free throw for the temporarily injured Eyl, but missed the second. THOMPSON continued his air-raid mastery with a 22-foot bomb, making the score 81-77. The 6-1 guard stole an Indiana pass and assisted Loy Vaught, Hughes' replacement, to slice the Indiana lead in half. Alford managed to get open on the left wing and fired up a 15- footer which, to everyone's surprise, missed. Thompson won the scramble for the rebound and threw an outlet pass to a streaking Glen Rice for a slam dunk, which tied the contest at 81-81. After trailing as much as 22-12 at the game's start, the Hoosiers were down 24-19 when the game turned around. Grant picked up his third foul, an offensive charge on the baseline, with 7:55 to play in the first half. Indiana outscored the Wolverines 32-10 in the rest of the period. Alford, who had previously been held to three points, connected for a five-point play with under seven minutes left to give Indiana its first lead. The senior All-American swished a 23-foot, three-point jumper, and was fouled after the shot by Jack Kramer. The Hoosier star then sank both ends of a one- and-one to put Indiana up 28-26. AP Poll 1. Wo men cagers split pair By GREG MOLZON This past weekend proved to be a mixed bag of good news and bad news for Bud Van De Wege and his women's basketball team as they split their first two Big Ten road games of the year. First, the bad news. Following two home losses to start the conference season, the Wolverines went to Columbus Friday looking for their first Big Ten win. However, the 18th-ranked Buckeyes had other ideas and sent Michigan reeling out of St. John Arena with their third straight loss, 72-48. The experienced Buckeye team dominated the game in every phase and put the Wolverines away early. Michigan shot only 17 percent from the floor in the first half and trailed 42-10 at the half. AFTER THAT, Van De Wege saw the game as a learning experience. "Basically, it was a case of a very young team being overpowered by a national power on their home floor." Van De Wege said. "We learned a lesson on the road that you really have to pull together as a team." The Wolverines didn't even have a single scorer in double figures, as they were led by Lisa Reynolds, Sharon Sonntag, and Vonnie Thompson, each with eight points. Enough of the bad news. A Sunday afternoon trip to Bloomington gave the Wolverines another chance to get their first Big Ten win. And this time, the team came out of the game with good news. Michigan had four players in double figures and pulled out a slim 65-63 victory over the Hoosiers. The Wolverines took the lead five minutes into the second half and led the rest of the way, although Indiana missed a shot at the buzzer which could have tied it. DEFENSE WAS the key to the win, as the team was able to shut down the Hoosiers' inside game and force them to take outside shots. Indiana's Carna Abram, who was leading the Big Ten in scoring with an average of 24 points a game, was held to just 12 points. "Defensively, our game plan worked to perfection and offensively, we made the most of our chances every time down the floor," Van De Wege said. Lorea Feldman paced the Wolverines with 18 points in the contest. Sonntag and Reynolds each added 14 points and Thompson played an excellent overall game with 12 points and 10 assists. Van De Wege was pleased to come out of the weekend with a split and his first conference win, but the team can't relax for too long.
