I Page 8 - The Michigan Dily-- Thursday, March 26, 1987 Myers to warm Ark By Marc S. Taras Eclipse Jazz is offering the Ann Arbor music crowd yet another "first" as Amina Claudine Myers makes her Michigan debut in one show at the Ark tonight. Myers' arrival has insiders buzzing ex- citedly. For better and worse, this remarkable pianist; vocalist, and composer is one of the best kept secrets in the world of music. E- clipse hopes that tonight's gig will let the cat out of the bag in Tree- town. Myers hails from Blackwell, Arkansas, where she began formal studies at the piano as a seven year old. Her education continued at Philander Smith college in Little Rock, where she majored in Music HIGH QUALITY FAST SERVICE LOW PRICES 'If these are your copying demands, you need Kinko's. kinko-s Qreat cwp0 S . In a phone in- terview from New York, Myers allowed that "I had another voice technique for chorale singing ... [and later] I had to relearn how to sing properly." Following the historical path of the music itself, Myers moved from the southern cradle, north to Chi- cago. She arrived in '63 to assume a teaching position, but by 1967 she had hooked up with the Asso- ciation for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. Myers eventually moved to New York to concentrate on composition and performance. She met saxo- phonist/composer Marion Brown when they shared the stage as part of a large ensemble led by Ambrose Jackson. This was the beginning of a lasting and inspiring relationship. Myers later recorded an album of Brown's compositions, Poems for Piano. She also met trumpeter Lester Bowie, a fellow AACM alumnus, and toured Europe with his group. Myers' recording career contin- ues to blossom as her musical expressions expand. She has scored a contemporary musical called "I Dream" and has penned an im- provisational suite for organ, in- struments and chorus. UM News in The Daffy 764-0552 Her keyboard work is warm and energetic; relaxed yet visceral. The music moves like a river from her fingertips, incorporating gospel, blues, and transafrican traditions and igniting them with a spark from within. She sings with an honesty that is mesmerizing. Myers is com- pletely comfortable in a wide variety of musical situations and moves from setting to setting with passion and grace. Tonight's performance will be with her regular trio. "Jerome Har- ris is so versatile..." Myers says, "And he always knows what to do." Drummer Reggie Nicholson has been driving the rhythm section on her newest recordings and promises to enliven this date as well. Myers is a natural. She draws on a mys- tical reservoir inside herself to create music and song that is as natural as the seasons. She is gentle and unassuming. "I'm not trying to make a 'statement'," she explains, "I'm trying to play what the spirit dic-. tates. I know that I am here for a reason ... [and I want] to make people feel good about something, [and] to feel good about them- selves." Tonight at the Ark, Amina Claudine Myers will offer you plenty of reasons to feel good. She has been following the dictates of the spirit all her life. Showtime is set for 8 p.m. Tickets are $8.50 and are available at PJ's Used Records, Schoolkids' Records, the Michigan Union Ticket office, or at the door. Bad'fe' (Continued from Page?7) possibly foolish. She knows where he lives, so why doesn't she ap - proach him directly, or at least slip a not under the door? Renting room doesn't get her anywhere. How to explain her insanity? Ken- na and Cameron never convince us of theplausibility of herasudden inability to reason logically. To make a movie about a woman driv - en mad by love isn't a bad idea, but The Good Wife isn't about that; it isn't about anything except the incompetence of the two gentlemen responsible for it. 4 In addition to the film's fatal flaw, Kenna and Cameron manage to throw in a few lesser ones, such as having a bartender, who could not possibly make enough money to dress so expensively, and throwing in a foolish sex scene between Ward and Brown's little brother. Stupidities like these, when hitched to the awful central plot in diates that The Good Wife scrapes he bottom of the barrel. 'Parting Glances' This critically acclaimed 1985 film about gay life is being shown at the Modern Languages Building, Auditorium 4 at 7:00 and 9:00 tonight. All proceeds will go to the Wellness Networks, Inc., a Detroit based AIDS education and victim welfare organization. Satellites: Reaching the stars (Continued from Page 7) bum is poised at number 10 on the Billboard chart after 21 weeks, and both of its singles, "Keep Your Hands To Yourself" and "Battleship Chains," have done well. Currently, the Georgia Satellites are supporting their album by opening band for touring acts such as Bob Seger and REO Speed- wagon. When asked about serving as an opening act, Richards says, "I don't mind it at all. We've been treated really well." He continued to say that touring has introduced them to a lot of "great people" on Order your Klipsch speakers by Op an Sat., March 28, and SAVE UP TO $399 JUNE AND JULY 1987 THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN-DEARBORN SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT IS OFFERING BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION COURSES FOR UNDERGRAD AND GRAD CREDIT IN LONDON, ENGLAND SCHEDULE OF CLASSES June 8th-25th. 1987 t July 13tlt-30th. 1987 the road and that the national exposure doesn't hurt, either. Speaking of exposure, the Geor" gia Satellites have done the "video thing" too, with- their clip for "Keep Your Hands To Yourself" receiving a lot of play on MTV, and the recent release of one for "Battleship Chains,"too. "They have their moments," says Richards on making videos, "You know, sometimes they can be fun, other times they're pretty tedious. As whole, as a single art form, I really don't like them at all. They some- times detract from the music itself instead of accentuating it." The band's tour with REO Speedwagon lasts through April 18, and after a two-day rest they're sche- duled to begin a massive world tour, covering Japan, Australia, and Europe. Obviously this puts any. new album several months dow the road, most likely at the end of this year or later. "The ultimate plan, I guess, is to keep doing ii," says Richards, "Keep making better records than the last one." The Georgia Satellites will Rte opening for REO Speedwagoh tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Crisler Arena. Tickets are $16.50. if you've ever thought about owning a pair of loud- speakers designed by the legendary Paul Klipsch, you just might want to make your move in the next few days. Even if you can't come up with "payment in full" for the speakers of your choice, don't despair. You can put them on lay-away with as little as ten percent down! But here's what's critical: Paul says the deadline for ordering your speakers at the old price is 6 p.m. Sat., March 28th. Visit The Stereo Shoppe at your earliest convenience - give Paul's legendary speakers a listen. Then make your move. But remember: the deadline for saving as much as $300 is 6 p.m., Sat., March 28th.
