4 Page 8 -The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, March 24, 1987 Men's linksters sputter to 15th place in South Florida Tourney "---t By BRIAN DELANEY In its first tournament of the season, the men's golf team competed in the South Florida Invitational at Tampa, Florida and placed 15th out of a very competitive 16-team field. The Wolverines finished with a three- day total score of 924 strokes, which was 33 strokes better than last year in the same tournament. Leading the team was junior Scott Chipokas, with a total of 226 strokes. Following Chipokas were John Codere (231), Bob Papp (232), Tom Paton (237) and Hersh Patel (248). Considering Michigan was the only team in the field which had not played in a tournament this year, they were confronted with a tremendous disadvantage to overcome. In addition, Michigan ,competed against the top Southern schools in the nation. These schools have a distinct advantage over their Northern counterparts in recruiting the. top high school golfers. As a result, many of the schools Michigan competed against are loaded with future professional golfers. R E L A T I V E to these circumstances, head coach Jim Carras was satisfied with his team's LAZERGRAPHICS UN COPYNG IPRINTING BINDING U FORMS aiphogrephlon' Printshops Of The Future COPIES Open 7Days GRAND OPENING SPECIAL 663-6816 715 N. UNIVERSITY (2nd Floor) Located at: S. STATE & N. UNIVERSITY performance. "Overall I was very happy with our performance and not concerned where we would finish," Carras said. The main objective of this tournament was "to practice against good competition, play within ourselves and improve each day,"Carras said. HE ALSO emphasized the fact that due to his team's lack of tournament experience, Michigan can't expect to win or place high in a tournament of this caliber. According to Carras , "the team needs more tournament experience," in order to be able to compete effectively against the top golf schools. The part of the squad's performance that pleased Carras the most was the short game. Due to the practice and timing that is needed to develop a solid short game, this is usually the most difficult part of golf to perform well at early in the season, but the Wolverines did putt particularly well. Carras is optimistic that a solid commitment and attitude from the team should be able to lift the squad to the top three of the Big Ten. Wolverines spring into home opener vs. Lakers By GREG MOLZON After a successful ten-day trip to Texas in which the baseball team won the Citrus Tournament at Pan American University, Wolverine fans will finally get a chance to see the team in person today in its home opener against Grand Valley State. Michigan, 7-2, will host the Lakers for a doubleheader at Ray Fisher Stadium beginning at 1 p.m. The Wolverines will be looking for their fifth and sixth consecutive victories after they swept their last four games to win the Citrus Tournament Championship over Kansas, St. John's, Miami (Ohio), and Pan American. It was the third year in a row that the Wolverines have won a tournament on their spring trip. HEAD COACH Bud Middaugh was satisfied with the team's success, but said that the results were misleading and that there is still plenty of room for improvement. "Offensively we need to improve quite a bit. I don't think we swung the bats very well. The other thing was, I thought defensively we broke down too much," said Middaugh. Although pitching proved to be the Wolverines' strong point, two of the team's best pitchers, Jim Abbott and Mike Ignasiak, combined to go 1-2 on the trip. The fact that the team did so well without their wins surprised Middaugh. "If I would have told you before the trip that Abbott and Iggy (Ignasiak) would be a combined 1-2, what kind of trip do you think we would have had?" the coach asked rhetorically. BOTH OF these pitchers will get a quick chance to turn around their fortunes as Ignasiak and Abbott will be the starters in today's games. Don't expect to see any complete games, though, because Middaugh plans to work as many pitchers as he can in order to keep them sharp for this weekend when the team will play four games in two days at Columbus. "We're always looking forward to an opener, but I'll probably split up the pitching so we can see quite a bit of our pitchers throw," said Middaugh. Other pitchers who may see action are Greg Everson (1-0 and 1 save), Mike Grimes (2-0), and Dave Peralta (2-0 and a 0.00 ERA). Although Middaugh wasn't particularly pleased with his squad's hitting in Texas, the Wolverines did hit .315 as a team and outscored their opposition 64-35. Leading the Wolverines' offensive attack were Steve Finken, Phil Price, Eddie Woolwine, and Bill St. Peter. 4 Daily Photo Michigan pitcher John Grettenberger is shown here pitching in a game last year. Eastern Michigan to visit 'M' netters By ADAM SCHRAGER Practice, practice, practice is what the men's tennis team will be looking for today at 2:30 against Eastern Michigan at the Track and Tennis Building. "This will be a good match for us to practice in," said head coach Brian Eisner who can notch his 270th career win with a victory against the Hurons. "I need to see people play in order to determine how good this team really is. We need to build consistency and the only way to do this is through actual match play." Although the lineup for Michigan has not been determined yet, there are bound to be people playing who have not had much playing time before. ' THIS IDEA was used last Friday against Northern Illinois and it proved to be very successful as victories were won by non-regulars Franz Geiger at number six singles and Michael Pizzutello and Chip McColl at number three doubles. "Our team has made dramatic improvements since the start of the season and they are continuing to make improvements," said Eisner. "We have set up on a monthly basis three goals for each individual in which specific improvement is stressed. At the end of the month, these goals will be evaluated and new oneswill be set to continue the improvement that we need.", EASTERN, 6-1, is led by senior number one singles player Matt Kuhlman, who has compiled a 9- 3 record at that spot so far this year. Freshman Aziz Hoosenally is the most consistent player other than Kuhlman on the Huron team. Hoosenally has a 5-2. record at the number five singles spot and has also played well at the number three doubles spot. Eastern is coming into this match after completing a trip down South where they beat teams such as Central Florida, Tampa, and Stetson with their only loss coming at the hands of Southern Florida.
