"Our moderate prices can capture the student audience" Choc Choc wants to stress fun shopping - it even has phones in the dressing rooms for an added feeling of attention. The store is far from the usual shopping exper- ience. Students get a 10% discount. - Clothes Cellar, 715 N. University. If you want brand name designer merchandise without having to drive very far, this is the place to go. As it was explained to me, this store buys one of a kind salvage merchandise from major department stores, such as Hudson's, and then sells it at half of cost. Sound intriguing? I want to stress that this is new merchandise, so you can look good, inexpensively. Since they're buying leftovers, so to speak, this store occassionally is able to get its hands on some really hot fashion items. "In one shipment we got in leather jackets," said store manager Ira Harrison. "To date, that is the hottest selling item besides the Gucci purses that we got in." Occassionally, the store does receive big ticket items such as an exercise bike, or leather briefcases for $20. You just have to hunt. - Laura Ashley, 514 E. Washington. This store is very romantic, with an abundance of lace and softness. The spring/summer collection is inspired by Matisse paintings. Laura Ashley brings simplicity back to fashion. A lot of the merchandise is made of such easy flowing and easy-to-care-for fabrics like cotton. Floral patterns are everywhere. Despite its obvious appeal for sophistication, the store does have some fun fashions that can appeal to student consumers. "We have a wonderful collection of party dresses which are perfect for formals and sorority functions," said Allison Krane; publicity manager for fashion. " Police File, 1731 Plymouth Rd., North Campus Plaza. Don't ever let it be said that fashion-conscious men are left out of the picture. Police File, the male counterpart to Choc Choc, is the store for men who want to develop "a little bit more serious and mysterious image," according to Julie Venners, the outlet's manager. One thing that makes the store interesting is its interior design, a prison motif. On the shelves is merchandise from designers like Giorgio Armani and Emanuelle Ungaro. The store also has a tremendous selection of designer men's cologne. Police File has the fashions of the New York, Calfornia, and Birmingham look, according to Venners. "The look, is very clean and bold," she said. "A look of maturity and one of taste." Our annual readership survey is coming soon!
