ARTS Friday, March 20, 1987 the Michigan Daily Page 7 Fier leads Golden Palominos to fame By V.J. Beauchamp Anton Fier and his ever-shifting concepts are the one constant that runs through all the Golden Palominos' projects. With three albums and two national tours to date, the Palominos have included the likes of Richard Thompson, Carla Bley, Michael Stipe, Chris Stamey, Jack Bruce, and John Lydon. Now, as a recombinant quartet of Fier (drums), Syd Straw (vocals), Peter Blegvad (guitar & vocals), and Jody Harris (lead guitar), they mark themselves as a avantgarde pop-rock Supergroup, and will play in town tonight at Rick's American Cafe. This is an early show; it will begin at 9 p.m. sharp. So be there on time, or be sorry. Fier is a mere mortal. He has to eat. When the Daily tried to reach him in New York City at the Top Cat recording studio, we were politely turned away. He was at McDonalds. Daily: How was McDonalds? Fier: Um, awful. I was just kinda hungry. I hadn't eaten yet today and it is the only thing in the neighborhood. D: So, what did you have? F: Fish Sandwich. With cheese. D: Whatcha doing at the Top Cat? F: Rehearsing. We have to rehearse if we're going to go on a tour. They don't. say Fier is difficult for nothing. This year's touring model includes Bernie Worrell (keyboards) from Talking Heads and Pretenders fame, Matthew Sweet (guitar and vocals), a "real charming little fellow" from Nebraska, and Robert Kidney (guitar and vocals), who fronts the Cleveland based Numbers Band, and performs his own song on the latest Palomino release, Blast of Silencel axed my baby for a nickel (on Celluloid Records). "I just always wanted to play music," said Fier, "It looked very satisfying, and it looked, well, like you didn't hurt anybody. " The idea of the Palominos came because he "had just wanted to have [his] own band." This didn't go without hitches. The original Golden Palominos lineup sounded a lot like noise. "Once I did the record (the Golden Palominos) , I decided it was all wrong. So it took me a couple of years to recover from that." The Palominos of recent history (on the new album and on last year'sVisions of Excess ) sound quite a bit different. Poppy, with only a slightly subliminated rumble of guitars. Last spring, the Palominos' touring line-up included Stamey, Bruce, Worrell, and Lisa Herman, as well as the fab four, and they blew the crowd right out of the Nectarine Ballroom and onto the street. Straw wailed like a banshee. She sings with the intensity of Mahalia Jackson shouting about Jesus. There were guitars, too. Three of them. Whew. Citrin is the catch of the day The Palominos will be appearing around town in a number of different ways today. At about 3pm, Straw, and perhaps Harris will submit themselves to an interview on WCBN-FM, (88.3). At 5 pm, many of the Palominos will be doing what they call an "in- store' at Schoolkids Records. And of course, all of the Golden Palominos will grace the small, but not insignificant, stage of Rick's American Cafe at 9 p.m. sharp tonight. You cant get your tickets around (Schoolkids' or the Union), or at the door. $12.50 in advance. UNIVERSITY By Lauren B. Shapiro Simplicity is the essence of Maggie Citrin's latest exhibit at the University's Museum of Art. Her paintings reflect an ability to translate wildlife and nature into art. As Citrin explains, "There is no separation between my life, art, and nature. Everything is one." Citrin gathers her images to- gether like portraits in a photo album. From a hike in the morn- ing, she may store the image of a solitary bird and later take the time to finely tune and develop that image on the canvas. There is a story behind each of Citrin's works. She then experimented with her water- proof camera and found herself inspired by the tranquility of the rhythmic movements of the fish she observed. Her magnified "Fish Underwater" evolved from these observations as well as from the artist's study of Spanish dance. "If you take the time to see what's around you, everything will come together," explains Citrin. "Natural things you pass by daily will sud- denly gain new importance." Citrin's exhibit draws its strength from contrasting images, both within and between the paint- ings. Long-legged flamingos with delicate, soft-colored necks glow in front of blue-green waters. In other works, Citrin paints bridges and lily-pads similar to those of Monet. Citrin layers colors into purple shadows and blue-green waters. Citrin explains that she doesn't follow a methodical pattern when creating light and shadow, but rather follows her instincts to re- capture the play of light on the can - vas. With the coming of spring, Maggie Citrin's exhibit is a good reminder to us all that we should slow down our pace once in a while and take time to appreciate the beauty of the natural environment.
