PETER, GRIMES KEY BATSMEN WIN OVER REDMEN M' takes one of two Special to the Daily EDINBURG, Texas - When Michigan third baseman Bill St. Peter stepped to the plate in the seventh inning against the University of Miami (Oh.) yesterday, his team had the tying run on third. Already in the game, St. Peter had gone 2-for-3, with two RBI's. But St. Peter had no more magic left in his bat. He went down on strikes, enabling pitcher Ben Bornau and the Redskins to pull out a dramatic 4-3 win. Bornau struck out seven, allowing just four hits. He gained revenge on the Michigan team that beat him, 1-0, last Saturday. The day, however, was not a total loss for St. Peter or the Wolverines. Earlier in the afternoon, St. Peter doubled in the game-winning run in the first inning to carry Michigan to a 7-3 win over St. John's. FRESHMAN pitcher Michael Grimes gained his first college win, striking out seven in six innings of work. Another freshman, Ross Powell, came in to close the door on the Redmen, pitching the final inning and striking out two. After the Wolverines took a 1-0 lead over St. John's on St. Peter's two-bagger, they increased the lead an inning later. Following a Tom Brock single, freshman first baseman Phil Price hit his first career home run. The two-run blast, off the scoreboard in deep right- center field, gave Michigan a commanding 3-0 lead. In the loss to Miami, the Redskins took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, but Michigan tied it in the bottom half of the inning. Chris Gagin reached second on a two-base error and St. Peter promptly delivered him home with a game-tying single. In the fifth, Michigan took the lead when Gagin reached first on a walk, moved to second on a grounder, and scored on a St. Peter single. Miami tied the score in the sixth and moved ahead on Dave Spragues' third hit of the game, a two-out, two-run single. In the bottom of the seventh, Michigan's Greg McMurtry led off the inning with a walk. He moved to second on a single by Gagin and was then replaced by pinch runner Jim Durham. After a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third, Steve Finkin hit a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-3 and to set the stage for St. Peter. The Wolverines are now 2-1 in the Citrus Tournament and 3-2 overall. They play Pan American University tonight.
