Page 8 - The Michigan Doily - Tuesday, March 17, 1987 U VOTE. SA VE PIRGIM. - "As a community, we believe that students have the right to form their own associations, elect representatives to governing bodies, and tax themselves to support organizations which represent their interests. In our society, it requires significant resources for a group to be heard. If students are denied the right to found, operate and fund their own organizations, then they are relegated to the status of second-class citizens without the means to present their concerns effectively. "We, the undersigned, endorse the ballot proposal to fund PIRGIM through a refundable fee of $1.25 added to the MSA fee. We believe that the PIRGIM funding question is an important students' rights issue. Last year, 16,800 students--a majority of the U-M campus--signed petitions demanding that students have the right to assess themselves a $2 refusable fee for PIRGIM. The Michigan Student Assembly, the faculty Senate Assembly, and numerous local and state officials endorsed students' right to assess themselves the fee. "In spite of this support for the PIRGIM fee, the Regents of the University publicly and privately refused to respect the students' decision to assess themselves the fee. The consequence of their refusal is to threaten PIRGIM's very existence at U-M. I 4 4 I "We now have the opportunity to protect students' rights and save PIRGIM. We believe the campus should vote 'yes' on Proposal B" - Professor Bunyan Bryant, School of Natural Resources Hillary Farber, MSA Women's Issues Committee Chair Professor Alexander Aleinikoff, School of Law Dean Baker Timothy Bennet, Res.
