I Women's Gymnastics vs. Bowling Green Crisler Arena Saturday, 2 p.m. SPORTS Men's Gymnastics vs. Michigan State and Air Force Crisler Arena Saturday, 2 p.m. The Michigan Daily Monday, March 16, 1987 Page 8 SPORTS OF THE DAILY Blue netters rally to victory Purdue and OSU lose to SEC and Big East foes By JULIE HOLLMAN For the men's tennis team, Saturday's 7-2 victory over Miami of Ohio was as sweet as a Hershey's candy bar. The Wolverines broke out to an early lead by capturing the two first singles matches. Michigan however, had to fight hard for this advantage. Ed Nagel, ranked seventh in the country, was taken by surprise as his Miami opponent, Jeff Scolnick, grabbed the first three games of the first set. After settling down, Nagel climbed back and forced Scolnick into a tie-breaker. In this set deciding duel, Nagel increased his game a few notches and showed the crowd his true form. He quickly ended the tie-breaker with a 7-1 victory ,and continued to roll over his adversary wiih a 6-3 second set win. THE WAVE of maize and blue that drowned the Redskins reached its highest peak in the number two singles. Dan Goldberg easily raked in Michigan's second point by defeating his opponent 6-2, 6-4. But suddenly the tide receded and Miami recorded two set victories at the number three and six singles. At the number five slot, Jon Morris won a hard fought battle after being down a set, to swing the score in favor of Michigan. Ed Filer, in the fourth position, followed Morris' lead and after dropping the first set, struggled to victory with a 6-7(8-6), 7-5, 6-4 score. IN THE doubles, the Wolverines shifted into high gear and took all three matches in two sets. Although coach Eisner was very pleased with the ratch, he feels his team has a long way to go before they reach their potential. "Right down the line we competed well. We are playing good solid tennis," Eisner explained. "We haven't had a bad match but we haven't played a great match. This was not a great match but it was better so we are moving in the right direction." Women net victory With strong performances from junior Tina Basle and senior Tricia Horn, the women's tennis team defeated Eastern Michigan 5-4 Friday at the Track and Tennis Building. The Wolverines avenged an earlier season loss to the Hurons (3- 5) to improve their record to 7-5. Basle won at first singles over Mary Smith 6-4, 6-1. "I thought Tina Basle played great," said Michigan head coach Bitsy Ritt. "Mary Smith's really a good player, a great competitor. I really thought it would be a closer match." At second doubles, Basle combined with Horn to crush EMU's Marta Varanba and Marie Morin 6-1, 6-1. "I really played well," said Basle. "I was really glad to play good in doubles. We (Basle and Horn) have been struggling a little bit. HORN squeaked by Varanba at third singles 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, and felt that her doubles play was improving. "We played consistently well," echoed Horn. "We moved in better and played mentally tougher than we had been." In other matches, Michigan's Leslie Mackey fell to Deneice Ka:rcher 6-3, 6-4, and Alison Miller lost by the same score to the Hurons' Rhonda Brown. Wolverine victories were turned in by Susie Patlovich and Annemarie Floreno at fourth and fifth singles, respectively. Eastern received strong play at both first and third doubles. The team of Smith-Kaercher cruised past Mackey-Floreno 6-2, 6-1. "It almost looked as if we were intimidated by them," said Ritt. "They (Smith-Kaercher) are a strong team, but if we had gone out there and played the way we we're capable of playing, it would have been a lot closer." Friday's match was the first one at second doubles for the team of Basle-Horn. -ROB LEVINE SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Guard Vernon Maxwell scored 24 points, and 7-foot-2 freshman center Dwayne Schintzius added 21 as Florida surprisingly buried No. 7 Purdue 85-66 yesterday and advanced' to the NCAA East Regional semifinals. The Gators, 23-10, runner-up in the Southeastern Conference regular season, will face No. 10 Syracuse. Thursday night's other semifinal pairing at East Rutherford, N.J. will be No. 2 North Carolina and Notre Dame, Saturday winners at Charlotte, N.C. Purdue, 25-5, which shared the Big Ten Conference title with Indiana, came out flat, making numerous turnovers. Maxwell scored 10 of his points in the first half when the Gators led 31-29. Appearing in their first NCAA tourney, the Gators led 54-46 with less than 13 minutes to go, then outscored the poor-shooting Boilermakers 14-1, including nine straight points, for a 63-46 advantage with 10:13 to go. Georgetown 82, OSU 79 ATLANTA (AP)- Charles Smith and Reggie Williams combined for seven 3-point field goals in the second half as the top- seeded and number four-ranked Georgetown rallied from a 15-point second-half deficit in beating Ohio State 82-79 yesterday in the Southeast Regional.
