Netters to host Redskins

e By ADAM SCHRAGER
Success many times is
something dreamed of, but in the
case of the men's tennis coach
Brian Eisner, success has been a
reality. Eisner has an unbelievable
p144-13 record against Big Ten
opponents in his 17 years as
vIichigan coach.

Tumblers to meet
Broicos, Im!
The men's gymnastics team is
looking for some strong
performances tomorrow night at 7
p.m. at Crisler Arena against
Illinois and Western Michigan.
Last Friday, Michigan scored a
season-high 269.50 points in a
losing effort to Houston Baptist.
Wolverine head coach Bob Darden,
knows his team will need a lot
higher score if it hopes to beat the
Illini, who are currently ranked third
in the nation.
"We are capableof a mid-270
score," said Darden. "With an
outstanding meet, we could win
this competition."
The last time the Wolverines
faced Illinois in January, they were
soundly defeated 273.60-268.05.
The Illini are led by all-arounds
Dave Romero and Tigran Mkchyn.
Michigan looks to senior all-around
Brock Orwig for support. Orwig
has won the all-around in two of
the last three meets. He also won it
against Illinois earlier in the year
with a score of 55.15.

Phillies sign Parrish
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - The
Philadelphia Phillies and the Major
League Baseball Players
Association reached an agreement
yesterday that allows free-agent
catcher Lance Parrish to join the
team in spring training today.
Phillies President Bill Giles,
after an eight-and-a-half hour
negotiating session, announced that
Parrish had agreed to a one-year
contract paying him $800,000, plus
$200,000 if he does not experience
any problem from a chronic back
ailment.
Giles said also that the contract
included financial incentives for
Parrish if he makes the All-Star
team or wins the National League's
Most Valuable Player Award. Giles
did not disclose the amount of the
incentives.
The Phillies and the association
had disagreed over a clause that
Giles insisted be included in the
contract to prevent Parrish from
filing suit against baseball for
alleged collusion in the signing of
major free agents.

By KEN GOLDBERG
Michigan's track program has not experienced
recent success at the national indoor championships.
In fact, it has been nine years since the men's mile
relay team finished as high as fourth place. This
year, however, the Wolverine representatives, which
include two individual runners and a relay team,
should make some noise today and tomorrow in
Oklahoma City.
For senior miler Chris Brewster, this will be his
third trip to the NCAA Indoors. As a sophomore, he
ran with the distance medley relay which failed to
qualify. Last year, Brewster qualified in the 3000
meter run but did not compete in the finals due to a
nagging hamstring injury. He hopes to avoid all
such problems this year.
"I've had some bad luck at nationals," said
Brewster. "Last year was very frustrating, but I'm

i./ OJ

hoping to turn it around and finish All-American,
perhaps win the title."
For senior Kelli Bert, last year's mediocre
performance in the 1000 m. at nationals was due to
inexperience. "The board surface and banked corners
of the tracks down there (Oklahoma City) are
different than what I'm used to," she said. "But the
conditions are the same for everyone, and with last
year's performance under my belt, I'm confident that
I can finish in the top six and qualify for All-
American in the 1000 meter."
The mens' 3200 m. relay team of Matt Butler,
Earl Parris, Rollie Hudson, and Omar Davidson will
also represent Michigan. Butler and Parris ran their
fastest half-miles of the season last weekend, ai
Hudson ran a 4:08 mile in final tune ups for the
NCAAs.

Filer
... No.3 singles
The men's tennis team, which
:has won the Big Ten championship
17 of the last 19 years, returns
home from a difficult trip with a 4-
2 record to host the Redskins of
Miami of Ohio tomorrow at 1:00 at
the Liberty Tennis Club.
p This year's success rests in the
hands of Ed Nagel, a junior transfer
rom Pepperdine. Nagel, rated as
one of the top players in the
country, has already compiled a 27-
6 record from the No. 1 singles slot
this year.
Nagel teams with senior Ed Filer
to provide the Wolverines with a
formidable doubles team. Filer, also
the No. 3 singles player, combined
with graduated Jim Sharton last
-year to qualify for the NCAA
doubles tournament.
Last year's most consistent
player, sophomore Dan Goldberg,
returns to help try to regain the Big
Ten title. Michigan lost it last year
:for only the second time since
1 :970. Goldberg, who played most
of last season at No. 1 singles, is
now playing No. 2 singles with the
addition of Nagel.
