The Michigan Daily - Friday, March 13, 1987 - Pog 9 Vii: ~ Jazz series continues , By Alan Paul Jazz and blues lovers of Ann Arbor listen up. Tomorrow night is your last chance of the year to discover one of the area's great secrets - WEMU's Depot Town Winter Jazz Series. The series concludes with its third show featuring a diverse three act lineup: the solo jazz guitar of Montache, the Joe LoDuca Quintet's bop, blues and fusion, and a one night ortly joint perfor - mance by two of Detroit's most popular blues players: singer Juanita McCray and singer, guitarist, and bandleader Robert Penn. McCray and Penn are evidently quite popular in the Detroit-area. They tied for first place in the blues category of the 1986 Metro Times Music Poll. They will perform together for the first time tomorrow night, an event both are eagerly looking forward to. McCray, who has been singing professionally off and on for 25 years, has seen her career skyrocket since deciding to work at her music full time five years ago. She has now won the MetroTimes poll three consecutive years. Such success has come in a thoroughly male dominated field. "I don't know how I do it," McCray said. "A lot of these guys... they're the boss. Women can be limited when it comes to leading. Somehow or another, with the help of God, I've done it." Penn returned to his native Detroft seven years ago . after spending several years on the west coast. He has found the less competitive, more laid back environment of his hometown helpful in developing his musical personality. "The competition in L.A. is so fierce. There's so many people trying to do the same thing," Penn said. "Here I've had a better chance to develop, to get my singing together, and to get my roots screwed down a little better. And Detroit has all the resources you need." "The talent that's been in Detroit over the years is phenomeil," Penn continued. "This was once the jazz capital... a lot of the best-cats were here and a lot still are. So that tradition rubbed off on some guys. They spread their knowledge of music around. I've learned more in Detroit than anywhere else." Montache gets tomorrow night's show at Ypsilanti's Farirs Market Building going at 7 p:n. followed by the Joe LoDdca Quintet at 8p.m. Penn and McCray take the stage at 10 p.m. and will play until 2 a.m. All seating is unreserved so come early for a goad seat and a hearty inexpensive meal.
