The Michigan baseball team will begin. preparing for its season this Thursday when it travels to Edinburg, Texas for its annual spring trip. The Wolverines will compete in the Citrus Tournament at Pan American University, which will include such teams as Miami of Ohio, Kansas, Oklahoma, St. John's, and host Pan American. HEAD COACH Bud Middaugh isn't too concerned about winning the tournament. $"We're just going to go down and try to play the best we can. If we win, we win it. If we don't, we don't, " Middaugh said. Middaugh will use the trip to find out where his offense will come from after losing top hitters Casey Close and Hal Morris from last year's Big Ten champion, which went 47- 12 overall, 13-3 in the conference. When asked who he thought would supply the offensive punch for this year's squad, the eighth-year coach replied, "That's a good question. I really don't know, but I wish I had the answer." CANDIDATES to fill the offensive void include Steve Finken (.358), Ed Woolwine (.343), and Bill St. Peter (.261 and five home runs).. Until the hitters come around, pitching will have to carry the team. Pitchers Mike Ignasiak (8-3), Chris Lutz (7-0), Jim Abbott (6-2), Greg Everson (6-2), and Jim Agemy (10-0 in 1985) form a solid returning staff, but the team most likely will be without Agemy and Lutz on this trip, due to surgery and sickness, respectively. One highlight of the trip will be the debut of celebrated freshman outfielder Greg McMurtry. McMurtry, who started five games as a receiver on the football team, was the first-round draft pick of the Boston Red Sox in last year's baseball draft. However, Middaugh warns about putting too much pressure on McMurtry early in the season. "I really don't feel it's fair to ask too much of him now since he's a freshman and we didn't really get him until January," Middaugh said. Like everyone else on the team, McMurtry will get his chance to play, as Middaugh will try to find the best combination for the long season ahead. "When you go on a spring trip, you're looking to give a lot of people an opportunity to play in a lot of games in a short time," said Middaugh. "Hopefully, a lot of decisions will be made on this trip."
