ARTS The Michigan Daily Wednesday, March 11, 1987 Page 5 Hoodoo Gurus: Live in Ann Arbor By Julie Jurrjens and Beth Fertig The Hoodoo Gurus are going to perform live on national television tonight. Well, not exactly. They'll be on cable's College Satellite Network, which serves 400 stations around the country. It shouldn't matter to you, though, because as a hip Ann Arborite you can trot down to the Nectarine Ballroom, the site of origin of this broadcast, and see this up and coming band rock out (and maybe get on TV) yourself. So, why did a nice Australian band like the Hoodoo Gurus pick Ann Arbor to be the site of this decisive event in their bid for college/world domination? "We just seem to have great shows there all the time," explained Brad Shepherd, the band's lead guitarist. "We're going to feel comfortable doing it. It's -going to be kind of scary to Australia and patched it all up like it was one big happy family." If anything should secure their notch on the American charts, it seems like this single stands a good chance. Their past underground and college radio successes, both on video and record, have included "Leilani," "I Want You Back," "Bittersweet," and "Death Defying," from their American releases Stoneage Romeos and Mars Needs Guitars. Unfortunately, these have never been enough to propell them off of the college charts and onto Lee Roth (Shepherd was excited to learn that Diamond Dave concur - rently issued a Spanish version of Eat 'Em and Smile, and plans to make that his next purchase), and in the past has tenderly crooned about necrophilia, this could mean any number of things. But remember, What do they do on all of those long plane rides? "Sleep," says Shepherd. But the inconveniences are worth it. "I lived in Australia for 20 years," he concludes, "I'm 26 now. I know what that place looks like now; I can afford to see other parts of the world." Tonight's show will be opened by Winter Hours at 10 p.m. Tickets are $12.50 at the door, or at PJ.'s, Schoolkids, and the Union. Remember, this is your big chance for your own 15 minutes offame. Their next break will be for two brief weeks in July, followed by four months on the road at home and in Europe, and then two more months touring North America. If they're going to do that, at least we can feel confident knowing that we're prob - ably going to do a great show in Ann Arbor. The crowds were great there, previously." There better be a good reason for this whole big media hype, right? Right. Curiously enough, there is a new Hoodoo Gurus album due out at the end of this month on Elektra Records (through Big Time Records, the independent label which supported their previous American releases). It's called Blow Your Cool, and its first single, "Good Times," features current pop darlings the Bangles. How did it happen, guys? "We became very good friends on the tour," said Shepherd, refer - ring to his band's opening spot on the Bangles' 1986 American tour. "The idea was, they were going to come out and sort of reciprocate the favor by coming out for us and. doing our Australian tour. That was going to be in January, but we were working on our album, and with the popularity of 'Walk Like an Egyptian,' they still had to tour the U.S. "The idea was [that] it was going *to be like a souvenir-type single to give away at the shows. When it became clear that we couldn't do it, the idea of the song still stuck in our head. The bulk of the track was done in Sydney, and I came [here] with a 'slave' tape, and took the girls in the studio, and took it back the turntables of average American youth. The Hoodoos have estab - lished a polished paisley-rock sound drawing on many other genres from surf to psychobilly. Shepherd says that Blow Your Cool will continue this trend, although he remarks that its production values are "sky high." "We're very, very happy with it," he adds. Coming from a man who also just admitted that his most recent record purchases were the newest LPs by Joni Mitchell and David Brad Shepherd the Hoodoo Gurus' Australian environment is noted for its eclec - ticism. After all, this is the same country which has also given us the Lime Spiders, Men at Work, and Olivia Newton John. When it comes to his own band, Shepherd dismisses the current American mythologizing of the Aussie music scene as one distin - guished by either pop phenomenons like INXS or underground grunge bands like the Scientists. "I don't really think of us as an Australian band," he responds. "I'd hope [American audiences] appreciate us because we're kind of different and we're exciting, and we write good songs. There's certainly a lot of good bands coming out of Australia, though." The Hoodoo Gurus have a busy AFTER HITTING THE BOOKS, C COME TO...
