The women's basketball team wrapped up a disappointing year on Saturday in West Lafayette with a 89-61 pasting at the hands of the Purdue Boilermakers. On Thursday, Illinois downed Michigan, 74-65 in Champaign. The Wolverines finished with a 9-18 overall record, 2-16 Big Ten, good for last place in the conference. MICHIGAN led 4-2 against Purdue, but that was their last lead of the game. The Boilermakers scored 16 unanswered points and ran * away from Michigan. Cathey Tyree and Sharon Versyp led the Boilers with 14 points apiece. Lorea Feldman scored 14 and senior Sharon Sonntag poured in 12 for the losers. Michigan shot only 32 percent for the game, 26 percent in the first half. "WE WERE not a good shooting team this year," said Michigan head coach Bud Van De Wege. "We did not shoot well enough to compete in the Big Ten. The Purdue game was indicative. There were two areas that hurt us-shooting and rebounding." Purdue outrebounded the Wolverines 55-37 as Tyree and Sandy Alston pulled down 11 boards each. Purdue stretched its lead to 29- 16, but Van De Wege didn't think his team was out of it. "We had chances to cut it to eight and ten," he said. "I felt at halftime we definetly could be back in the game in a matter of minutes, or if you let them get on a roll, it could be a 20 point lead. The latter is what happened." INDEED, Purdue increased its 37-23 halftime lead to 47-27 less than four minutes into the second half. The Boilermakers coasted the rest of the way, never seriously threatened by Michigan. Against the Fighting Illini, Michigan shot 38 percent from the field and couldn't recover from a 12 point halftime deficit. Feldman led the Wolverines with 18 points and Jonelle Polk tossed in 18 and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds for the NCAA Tournament-bound Fighting Illini. Michigan Daily SPORTS 763-0376 Van De Wege acknowledged his team was outclassed this weekend, especially against the aggressive Boilermakers. "THEY WERE explosive and kept pushing it at you," said Michigan's head coach. "They happened to shoot very well and things were going very well for them as they got (the score) up into the 20's. Once that happened, then (our) team felt a little life had been taken out of them." In a season of anguish, positives have emerged. Transfer guard Vonnie Thompson set a new single-season assist record and Van De Wege introduced an exciting run-and-gun offense with potential stars in freshmen Leslie Spicer, Lisa Reynolds, and Tanya Powell. The head coach remains optimistic despite Michigan's poor Big Ten showing. "I see a lot of positives out of this year. I don't see it as a 2-16 year, but a 9-18 year," said Van De Wege. 'The Big Ten took four teams to the NCAA (Illinois, Ohio State, Iowa, and Northwestern). That's eight games; against NCAA--caliber opponents, Van De Wege sees a lot of work ahead for his team if they are to become competitive in the rugged Big Ten next year. "The players have to dedicate: themselves over the summer," said the third-year head coach. "They just can't sit around and wait 'til next September. Experience makes them better."
