4 Page 8 - The Michigan Daily - Monday, March 9, 1987 Rush Delivery BY JEFF RUSH Keady's characterization should ignite Wolverines Purdue coach Gene Keady was seething long after the Michigan Wolverines had thrashed his No. 3 Boilermakers before 13,609 wild Crisler Arena fans and a national-television audience. The target of his anger was not his team's poor performance, but instead, Michigan's outstanding performance. A perfectionist, Keady was not upset because Michigan played well, but because the Wolverines are not able to play at that level every time they take the court. "You know what fucking pisses me off?" he was overheard yelling just outside his locker room nearly an hour after the game had ended. "Why doesn't fucking Michigan play like that every fucking game? You know why? It's because they got no fucking character." NO CHARACTER, said Keady. No moral strength, no self- discipline, and no fortitude, according to Keady. Is that the reason Michigan has been so inconsistent? In the past, probably. The Wolverines blew through the Big Ten in each of the past two years. Michigan coach Bill Frieder is quick to point out how difficult it is for teams to win an outright title in the Big Ten. Even in winning those titles, however, the Wolverines often looked sluggish - and without character. They barely beat teams of much lesser talent. A win is a win, said the Wolverines. Yawn, said their fans. Michigan rose to the occasion to crush Indiana for the Big Ten championship last year, and fans excitedly looked forward to the tournament. Like the year before, Michigan stumbled its way through the first game, and lost in the second game, seemingly underestimating its opponents. No self-discipline. THE PLAYERS who made up the bulk of the team that disappointed its fans have departed. Gone with those players were hopes of doing well this season in the Big Ten, much less the tournament. Something funny happened, though. The team that showed up at Crisler this year showed much more emotion than the previous teams. A win seemed to take on more meaning for this team. The Wolverines showed plenty of character in winning against three teams that were ranked in the top five when the Wolverines played them - Syracuse, Iowa, and Purdue. Gary Grant pumped up the team with not only his incredible basketball skills, but also with his fist-waving orchestration of the crowd. Antoine Joubert, who more than anyone else has received criticism for the Wolverines' shortcomings, recently has turned in two of his best performances. With an NCAA bid in their pockets, the Wolverines now have a chance to show something to Keady and the rest of their doubters. They have to decide if they want to make the most of that chance. Michigan's ball- hawking defense, led by All-Big Ten guard Gary Grant, created 10 Purdue turnovers before halftime, sparking the Wolverines' transition game. With sophomore forward Glen Rice dominating the boards, and the Wolverine guards hitting from long range, Purdue could never get close. A small Boilermaker rally cut the Michigan edge to 32-19, but eight straight points from Joubert blew the game open for good. THREE DAYS earlier, Michigan had been blown out of Crisler Arena, losing 89-75 to Illinois, in a game not nearly as competitive as the score. The Wolverines' amazing turnaround was no surprise to Keady. "We to4 (our team) this was going to happen, because Michigan got embarrassed on their home court, and a team that talented is not going to let that happen twice," he said. "After that loss, we had something to prove to the crowd and to ourselves," said Michigan center Mark Hughes. "We really dedicated ourselves, and decided i practice that we were just going to go out and play our best. We just put everything together. This was the best game we played all year. We had 40 minutes of good ball." Frieder gave some minutes to several of his rarely-used backups in the second half. Senior guard Ron Gibas, the only other Wolverine making his final home appearance1 hit two shots from 19 feet, bringing the Crisler Arena noise level to a deafening level. Fan favorite Steve Stoyko added four points, including a tip-in after an offensive rebound. nioripy MICHIGAN Receive Identical PIZZA FREE with this adv.
