It's another thing to defend it. Just ask the Los Angeles Lakers, or the Chicago Bears. This past weekend in Indianapolis, the men's swimming and diving team made the task look easy, successfully defending their Big Ten Championship title, finishing 170 points ahead of second-place Iowa. Heavily favored Michigan didn't foresee an easy defense of its crown. "The whole year went pretty good. (We didn't expect to win) this Seasily," said head coach Jon Urbanchek. The impressive Wolverine victory earned Urbanchek Big Ten Coach of the Year honors. "The other coaches are doing a good job. Maybe I've been more fortunate to have all of these athletes," said a modest Urbanchek. -L E A DIN G the rout for the Wolverines was senior co-captain Dave Kerska. Along with Iowa's John Davey, Kerska was named Co- Big Ten Swimmer of the Year for winning five Big Ten titles- including two individuals- and contributing to three meet and conference record-breaking relays. Michigan started the meet 'slowly, finishing the first day of competition only eight points ahead of Iowa. But the team's ,performance crescendoed on Friday when the Wolverines won five out ,of the six events swam that day. The peak of the meet for the :Wolverines came with a1-2-3. finish in the 200-yard freestyle on Friday with Kerska, senior co- captain Joe Parker, and freshman Brent Lang making up the triumvirate. When the race was over, only .12 seconds separated the three Wolverines. Times of 1:36.78, 1:36.81, and 1:36.90 earned all three qualifying positions for the NCAA Championships to be held April. "I expected them to win 1-2-3," said Urbanchek. "I had the most confidence in those people (Kerska, Parker, Lang)." ALTHOUGH not as dramatic, the trio made a repeat performance in the 100-yard freestyle on Saturday, finishing in the same order, with Kerska's time of 43.99 leading the field. Both Kerska's and Parker's times qualify them for the NCAAs. Kerska, Parker, and Lang helped the 800-yard free relay and 400 free relay win Big Ten championships and set all-time Big Ten records with times of 6:30.00 and 2:56.40 respectively. Sophomore Bjoern Warland joined the 800 free relay team and junior Mike Creaser completed the 400 free relay. Creaser, along with junior Jan- Erick Olsen and sophomore Marty Moran embodied the Wolverines' dominance of the meet by winning both the 100- and200-yard events in the backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly, respectively. Creaser made the NCAA cut by winning his 200-yard back race in 1:49.20, beating teammate Alex Alvizuri by .2 seconds. He won the 100-yard back in a close race with Wisconsin's Tom Senn, who touched only .1 behind him. OLSEN LED Michigan in" individual records with all-time Big Ten records in the 100-yard and 200-yard breast with times of 54.77 and 1:59.58. His victory in the 200 was Olsen's third consecutive Big Ten title in that event. Olsen added another record to his name by swimming on the record-breaking 400-yard medley relay with Lang, Creaser, and Kerska. Moran's swim of 1:45.64 in the 200-yard fly, setting a new meet and Big Ten record, highlighted his sweep of the fly events. He won the 100-yard fly in 49.00, touching out Indiana's Bill Mathews. His times in both events also earned Moran a spot in the NCAAs. Sophomore Mats Nygren will also be in Austin, Texas, for the NCAAs in April as a result of his fourth-place swim of 15:18.53 in the 1,650-yard free. Nygren's time also set a new school record, held previously by sophomore Bill Kopas. Under the coaching of Dick Kimball, the divers also enjoyed an exceptional weekend for the Michigan team. Sophomore Lee Michaud finished third in the one- meter diving and fifth in the three- meter event. Freshman Bill Hayes captured fourth in the three-meter. Urbancek ...
