The Michigan Daily - Friday, March 6, 1987 --Page 11 Purdue poses ,potent problem (Continued from Page 1) ,When it's time to make those Ypicks, they can hopefully pick us if we beat Purdue. Now, since we "lost (to Illinois Wednesday night) s ;we have to go out there with .some fire and win that one." :Bouncing back from the crushing 89-75 loss to the Illini :twill be a difficult task. ~Wednesday's blowout was only ~the third time in the last four ,,years that Michigan has lost at ;home by more than three points. rJebounding against Purdue could -'be especially difficult. Grant, however, believes Michigan (18-11 overall, 9-8 Big Ten) can put the defeat behind them. "I don't think it will be hard because we've got a couple days to practice before we play Purdue," he said. "Our shots will be falling on Saturday." Purdue (24-3, 15-2) hopes a milestone will fall tomorrow. A victory would give the Boilermakers their first outright Big Ten championship since 1969. It would also seal up a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tourney, likely at Indianapolis in Purdue's backyard. The Boilers can go inside and outside with equal proficiency. Tumblers set for EMU By JIM DOWNEY Motivation should not be a problem. The women's gymnastics team knows what it must accomplish when it hosts Eastern Michigan at 7 p.m. Friday and Kent State at 1 p.m. Sunday. The prospect of facing Mid- American Conference schools is usually a welcome break from rugged Big Ten competition, but in order to stay in the chase for an NCAA Regional berth, the team must bump its performance up a notch. "The pressure is really on," said Wolverine head coach Dana Kempthorn. "I think everyone realizes we need to break through to 180." HER TEAM has consistently scored in the high 170's, but at this point in the season has yet to reach the figure she believes will carry them to post-season competition. The Wolverines' MAC competition can be expected to post marks in the mid-170's. Angela Williams and Janne Klepak will play a large role in Michigan's hopes. The pair will Wins needed vs. MAC teams for NCAA berth both perform all-around against Eastern Michigan, but could be limited to three events on Sunday, depending on their health. Williams has been bothered by a bad shoulder and Klepak has an ankle problem. If they do perform all-around against Kent State, Kempthorn hinted that their routines might be "watered down" to reduce strain. FRESHMEN Jeffries and Jeni Hescott will also be counted on for strong efforts. Jeffries, from Bethesda, Md., has worked all- around every meet this season. Hescott, a native of Holland, Mi., has been a consistent performer in the floor exercise and vault. "We've been training really hard," said Kempthorn. "We're working to eliminate some of our misses." The coach believes that reaching 180 is not unreasonable if her squad can hit on more of its routines. In preparation for the stretch drive, the Wolverines spent Spring Break at East Stroudsburg (Pa.) State, which hosted the International Gymnastics Training Camp. The team worked out at an Olympic training facility and performed against some of the top gymnasts in the country. A meet against the host school resulted in a 177.75-159 Wolverine triumph. Joubert and fellow senior Garde Thompson will be playing their last regular-season game at Crisler Arena. I Bruising center Melvin McCants (12.0 points per game) and forwards Todd Mitchell (16.1 ppg) and Doug Lee (10.1 ppg) are tough under the boards, while guards Troy Lewis (19.1 ppg) and Everette Stephens (11.8 ppg) can light it up from long-range. The Boilermakers have won eight in row, including a 69-59 win at Michigan State Wednesday night which assured them of at least a tie for the Big Ten crown. Indiana (13-4 Big Ten) trails the leader by one game. The Hoosiers need a win over Ohio State tomorrow, and a Purdue loss, to share the title. Ohio State, with an upset at Bloomington, could do serious damage to Michigan's tournament hopes. The Wolverines and Buckeyes are tied for fifth place in the Big Ten at 9-8, and both are borderline candidates for an NCAA bid. If one wins tomorrow and the other loses, the loser could likely be left out of the 64-team field. MACTRUCK BUYERS- YOUR SOFTWARE IS HERE! bm.
