CCRB Page Il The Michigan Daily Friday, March 6, 1987 Versatility- Freshman hoopster puts spice into her life with performances both on and off court f By SHELLY HASELHUHN Whether she's got her pumps or high tops on, freshman Leslie Spicer knows where she's going and how to get there. Though her friends label her as a fun and easy-going person, the starting forward on the Women's basketball team also exhibits a sharp intellect. Spicer paints the portrait of a serious student-athlete. The former Prep Academic All- American has had to balance her time between school and basketball. She thrives on the pressure her. lifestyle creates, and attributes her Michigan Ensian Spring Photography Staff Mass Meeting Sunday, March 8 at 1 p.m. In the Ensian office, ground floor of the Daily Building, 420 Maynard Bring Portfolio r Meet Your Friends at ... "When I'm out of the gym, I'm devoted only to my schoolwork, and I feel myself working even harder this term." Inspired by the ficticious lawyer, Perry Mason, Spicer's goal in life is to sit on the bench, the bench of law. "I want something stable in life. I watched Perry Mason everyday over the summer and I know I can do it. Basketball will become just a hobby after (I am finished with) school." Because of her demanding schedule, Spicer's dormmates don't see much of her, but they say she doesn't go without being heard. Spicer continues to nurture her musical abilities by singing in her dorm room and at her home church where she is an active member. "SHE HAS A beautiful voice," said one girl on her hall. "We'll be studying and we'll hear her through the walls. When she sings, everyone listens." "I want to keep working with my voice," said Spicer. "If I stop singing or playing, I don't know what will happen to me. I don't want to lose those talents." Performing before crowds was not unfamiliar to Spicer when she took over center stage at Crisler Arena. Her mom was pushing her toward ballet, but for the tomboy growing up with three athletic big brothers, basketball would inevitably win out. Spicer is still in awe about her Michigan scholarship. She always wanted to attend a highly academic college, but never dreamed basketball would pave the way. "IT'S SUCH an honor to be here and be an athlete too," exclaimed Spicer. "Every time we passed this exit (on the expressway), I'd say, 'I want to go there someday' but I never thought I'd get here." Not only is Spicer an impact person, but an impact player. Spicer stole the high-scoring honors twice from star teammate Lorea Feldman earlier this season. On one of those occasions, she captured a career- and game-high 22 points against Michigan State, leading the team to one of only two conference wins. "She is an inspired player with a good attitude, a lot of hustle and enthusiasm," said head coach Bud Van De Wege. "She is a very focused individual, with discipline in academics and basketball." One reason for Spicer's on-the- court success is her emphasis on team goals rather than individual achievements. "I like the fact that we won the track relay, we won the talent contest, we won the game-not me," said Spicer. "I put my all into everything, but you can't do much alone. You've got to have some help from someone." The other reason? "She's a natural," said her high school coach, Charles Henderson. "She'll be a success at whatever she does, whether that be playing ball or just reporting the weather."
