The 20th annual Women's Weekend begins tonight and features speeches by successful women and women's artwork, drama, and poetry. A major concern of the organizers of this year's event is to increase male attendance. Kristina Larson, chairperson of publicity, said most men have a mis - conception of the aims of the Women's Weekend. "We are not militant feminists. We want to provide a forum or opportunity for women to speak to other people, not just women," Larson said. Barry MacDougal, a Resident Fellow at East Quad, said sexism is "not just a women's struggle, it's everyone's struggle." A primary concern of the group is to encourage men to attend the program. "White males are the power structure of society. We need to increase awareness and perception in order to change (their) viewpoints," MacDougal said. PROGRAM coordinator Carin Corser said, "Equality and equal opportunity is a state of mind, not (of) law." By increasing awareness of women's issues, Corser said she hopes one day a women's day won't be necessary. Assistant Secretary General of the United Nation Mercedes Briceno will give the keynote address tonight on "Third World Women and Social Change" at 8 p.m. in East Quad's Auditorium. Tomorrow's program features an art exhibit from noon to 6 p.m., and a panel discussion at 2 p.m. of University students from Mexico, Jordan, Nigeria, Taiwan, and South Korea. At 7 p.m., Jane Thorson will speak on the "History of Gender Roles: an international perspective" followed by films at 9 p.m. The weekend concludes Sunday with a coffee house from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. during which students and the public may present original poems, skits, and songs. An endnote discussion with Sohair Soukkary, the deputy chief of the United Nations Development Fund, will follow. All events will be held in East Quad and are free. The weekend is being run by East Quad and The Campus Coalition for Women. WQBN, the Residents Housing Association, the Michigan Student Assembly, and Continuing Education for Women are sponsoring the weekend.
