After blowing two double-digit, second-half leads to conference foes (luring the past month, Illinois pounded Michigan for 40 minutes last night at Crisler Arena. The Wolverines outscored the Illini, 19- 9, over the last four minutes to make the 89-75 final score deceiving. "THEY just played so well and we played equally as bad," said Michigan coach Bill Frieder. "They're an excellent team and when you get behind an excellent team you start deviating, and it just goes from bad to worse." After Michigan's Glen Rice and Illinois' Jens Kujawa exchanged baskets to begin the game, the Illini raced off 12 consecutive points and 18 of the next 21. Guard Tony Wysinger scored 10 of his 17 points during the seven-minute onslaught, as the Illini refused to miss during the stretch. Illinois converted 11 of its first 14 field goals and went on to shoot 62 percent for the half. Michigan (18-11, 9-8) hit on justfour of their first 21 shots and finished the half shooting at a lowly 34 percent clip. All-American Ken Norman put an exclamation point on an already devastating first half by throwing in a 22-foot prayer as the buzzer sounded. For Norman, who would finish with a team-high 19, it was his first successful three-point shot of his career. The 14-point margin of victory was Illinois' largest ever at Crisler Arena. It was also the first win for the Illini in Ann Arbor since the 1982-83 season. WYSINGER led Illinois with 13 first half points, including three- of-four from three-point range. "We came out and played hard and got a lot of shots down early," said Wysinger. "We did something that we haven't done so much of and that's sustain a lead." Even down by 19, it looked as if Michigan could rally at the start of the, second half. Wysinger (seven- of-twelve) finally missed a shot, and the Wolverines' Garde Thompson buried a three-pointer to make the score 46-30. West German native found himself on a two-on-one break with guard Steve Bardo, with Mark Hughes as the lone Wolverine on defense. When Hughes committed to Bardo, Kujawa roared down the lane and pounded home a heart-breaking, momentum-crushing slam dunk. K U J A W A (10 points, five rebounds) would hurt the Wolverines all evening with an assortment of running hook shots and off-balance leaners. "We did everything right and I think Michigan was flat," said Henson, Illinois' 12-year head coach. "And anytime you run into a ballclub where they're doing everything right, you can't do much with them." Michigan's Gary Grant led all scorers with 27 points, although 13 of those came in the final four minutes. Rice finished with 20 points and seven rebounds. "We just didn't play good, they kicked our ass," Grant said. "We were ready to go. It was just one of those days where nothing went right. "I haven't been in a situation in my whole career where we got beaten like this, high school or college. It was very frustrating." 1Ilanoyed ii For information, return to: Special Programs Siddmore College, Box M ea SaratogaCSpringseNew York 12866 Name + Address City. State.
