Page 12 - The Michigan Daily - Red's By ADAM SCHEFTER The Michigan hockey squad has the opportunity this weekend to seek vengeance and move up in the standings at the same time. The Wolverines face off against fifth place Illinois-Chicago (just three points ahead of Michigan) this Friday and Saturday nights at Yost Ice Arena. It is the same team which humiliated a short-handed Michigan squad 5-2 and 13-3 in November. And Red's boys are not forgetting a thing. "THIS weekend is a big weekend," said winger Bryan Deasley. "We can move up to fifth place with a sweep. We're also looking for revenge from these guys. They beat us pretty badly last time and rubbed it in our faces." Michigan lost the series with the Flames with the team suffering - Friday, January 9, 1987 boys a from food poisoning. After the second loss, UIC players skated around the ice with brooms, making fun of their opponents' condition. That was the last time, though, and this time the Wolverines have shown signs of coming to life. They have won four of their last six and are on somewhat of a roll, by their own standards. "We made a lot of mistakes from inexperience earlier in the season," said head coach Red Berenson. "Now we have started to see a little more poise and a little more confidence and we are seeing more players who are contributing night after night." BESIDES getting the reliable strong performances from the CCHA's leading scorer Brad Jones (16-29-45) and defenseman Jeff Norton, the Wolverines' Ryan THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN HOSPITALS OLUNTEERS iming Pardoski, Mike Moes, and Brad Turner have also begun to chip in. The more balanced scoring has been the key to the recent success and will continue to be a deciding factor if the Wolverines harbor any thoughts of moving north in the standings. For now however, the record is only 8-16. Still, UIC's head coach Val Belmonte discounts the Wolverines record and expects to see a tough series this weekend. "Michigan has some talented players with good credentials. Even though it has been an up and down season for them, they are still very competitive. We can't go into a series taking any one lightly. Certainly any team in the CCHA is capable of playing well any weekend. I don't care if you are Michigan State, who is at the top of the pack, or if you are Miami or Ferris who are at the bottom of the pack." MUCH OF the burden of making sure the Flames don't come out flat this weekend will fall on the shoulders of sophomore center Jeff Nelson. He is the sparkplug which ignites the Flames attack. He is a quick skater and has a strong shot with 11 goals and 23 assists. "He's deadly," Belmonte said. "If you leave a kid like that alone, he is going to do some damage to you. He really gets our team going and our offense rolling." It unclear who will back up Nelson and crew in the nets. UIC rotates three goalies, Jim Hickey (4-5, 4.80), Dave Depinto (4-4, 4.40), and Brad Ryan (2-2-1, 3.60), but due to illness the goalies will not be decided until game time. Regardless, Michigan knows what it is going to take to get a sweep and come up with a second half surge. It must score goals at a more consistent rate, kill off penalties better (they are letting up one goal with every three chances), and get the goals against average (5.91) down. Feats that are certainly not insurmountable for this young and talented team. "Overall, our team is starting to come together," Berenson said. "I felt all along that our best hockey was ahead of us. We just hope it isn't too far ahead.i" for revenge on IC (Lb Venture into High Tech and add to the Human Touch Help patients with the Healing Process Learn about the 150 rewarding volunteer opportunities INFORMATION SESSIONS MONDAY, JANUARY 12, 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. Hospital Amphitheater THURSDAY, JANUARY 15 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. Hospital Amphitheater TUESDAY, JANUARY 20 4:00 -5:00 p.m. Room 2C228, University Hospital Daily Photo by JOHN MUNSON Please call 764-6874 for additional information.
