ARTS Page 7 ,The Michigan Daily Monday, March 2, 1987 Page 7 Hughes latest teen flick; 'Kind of Wonderful' 3 N By Seth Flicker From Sixteen Candles to Ferris Bueller's Day Off, John Hughes has graced us with humorous, though overly- generalized, "high-class" teen flicks. By "high-class" I mean, compared toWhere the Boys Are '84, Hughes tries harder to delve into the teenage psyche, though, most of the time, unsuccessfully as seen in The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink. But where these fail in character development, continuity and believability, Hughes newest venture, Some Kind of Wonderful, makes the grade. Some Kind of Wonderful is not that much different from Pretty in Pink. With a mere gender change, you have the same plot: a boy 'from the other side of the tracks' falls head over heals with Ms. Popularity (who is going out with Mr. Popularity) and tries to woo her away. Stick in "the best friend" who discovers that she is in love with the protagonist and there you have it. You may ask yourself, "If these two movies are so alike in plot, how can one be so much better than the other? They were even produced, written and directed by the same people (Hughes and Howard Deutch)." Some Kind of Wonderful's success lies in its subtlety and sensitivity. It doesn't grab you by the collar and say, "Hey, we're teenagers and we have problems." Wonderful takes it a little slower. We see characters here, not just one-faced teenage zombies. Of course it is overly- generalized like most Hughes films. He takes emotions and categorizes them in files labeled 'love,' 'revenge,' 'rivelry,' 'infatuation,' etc. It is an isolated See 'WONDERFUL' Page 8 Eric Stoltz and Mary Stuart Masterson's friendship heats up in 'Some Kind of Wonderful.' a.
