Joubert then missed the front line of a one-and-one, but J. P. Oosterbaan rebounded the shot and put it in. Michigan then scored seven more points to close out the game with 107 points, the first time since 1978 that the Wolverines went over the century mark in Big. Ten action. Gary Grant led the Wolverines with 35 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Garde Thompson added 22 points, 15 in the second half. Glen Rice had 19 points and 16 rebounds, and Antoine Joubert scored 13. Hopson led the Buckeyes with 39 points and eight rebounds. THE BUCKEYES, a press- and-run team that has played well beyond many writer's pre-season expectations, attempted to press and run against the Wolverines from the, start. eats ( That was all Michigan needed, said Thompson. "Before the game we didn't know whether or not we were going to get into a fast-break game," said the senior. "We could tell they wanted to run two minutes into the game. As soon as we saw they wanted to run - that's our game plan. "When we fast break, the key to winning is rebounding. If we get the rebounds, we're going to win." They got the rebounds. Michigan out-rebounded Ohio State 49-33, setting up a wild, quickly paced game. THE PLAY was rough, and the fouls came in bunches - 48 personals on the two teams and a technical late in the game on Williams. Midway through the first half, Oosterbaan hacked Hopson as the Buckeye was going toward the )SU fo basket, and the two exchanged words. The crowd roared with disapproval at several calls against the Wolverines. And Frieder, apparently frustrated with his team's play in the last two minutes of the first half, pushed a cameraman out of his way as the team went into the lockerroom at halftime. THE PUSHING continued in the second half. Joubert and Buckeye Tony White pushed each other and appeared to exchange words, and seconds later, a double foul was called on Rice and Jerry Francis. For the first 18 minutes of the game, the Buckeyes looked nothing like the team that came close to upsetting the nationally-ranked r first Indiana Hoosiers Sunday on national TV. After Ohio State went up 9-4, Michigan ran off the next 11 points, putting the Wolverines in front for the rest of the game. A Hughes rebound led to a three- point basket by Grant, and after a couple out-of-control drives by both Grant and Buckeye Curtis Wilson, Thompson drove in for a layup to tie the score at nine and was fouled by Jerry Francis. Thompson's charity toss put the Wolverines ahead. A Hughes' tip-in and a layup and free throw by Grant put the Wolverines up 15-4. Ohio State closed to within five with 8:11 left in the half, but Michigan then outscored the Bqckeyes 22-9 to take a 51-33 lead. Big Ten Page 10 wIn Bring on Bobby OHIO STATE Min. NCAA bars booster.1 from recruitment FA Xnr4 SAN DIEGO (AP) - Boosters were barred from having anything to do with recruiting athletes for colleges Thursday at the NCAA convention, and a group of athletic directors defied the Presidents Commission by refusing to withdraw several key items from the agenda. A measure to ban boosters entirely from the recruiting process was passed virtually without opposition. The legislation bans supporters of college athletic teams from even telephoning or writing to a high school prospect. "It will enable us to tell our recruiting interests they can do absolutely nothing," Georgia football coach Vince Dooley said of the rule. Actions by over-zealous boosters in giving gifts and cash as a way of luring top prospects have resulted in several schools being placed on probation by the NCAA. The vote to try and exclude the boosters from being involved in recruiting came after the athletic directors cut football scholarships from 30 per year to 25. Their vote was a rebuff of the presidents group.
