Women's Indoor Track Big Ten Championships Feb. 27-28 Track and Tennis Building SPORTS Men's Basketball vs. Northwestern ' Tomorrow, 1:00 p.m Crisler Arena The Michigan Daily Friday, February 20, 1987 Page 9 M' jcers prepared for No. 1 Falcons By ADAM SCHEFTER . During Red Berenson's first year as Michigan's hockey coach in 1984-85, his squad faced a powerful Lake Superior team in the playoffs. They were swept in two games. The next season, his team ventured to East Lansing for the playoffs, only to come away with the same result as the season before. N OW, once again, his team will face either Lake Superior or Michigan State in the first round of the CCHA playoffs starting February 27. This weekend will be the final tune-up for Michigan's post-season activity. But it is more than just a dress rehearsal. It's against the Bowling Green Falcons, and it's for sole possession of sixth place. Michigan is currently tied with Ohio State, but the Wolverines hold the tiebreaker edge. The Falcons are in a battle of their own. They are currently in first place and are vying for the CCHA championship. It would be their seventh in the last 12 years. TONIGHT'S contest will be played in Ann Arbor, and then the teams will travel to Bowling Green for Saturday's game. "Michigan is playing really good hockey now," said Falcon assistant coach Kevin Mann. "They've improved a lot and they are really coming on now. Our team is aware of what they can do." Bowling Green can do some things, also. In fact, a lot of things. The offense is led by junior Paul Ysebaert (20 goals, 52 assists, 72 points), lain Duncan (21-36-57), and Don Barber (26-28-54). Bowling Green averages 5.57 goals per game, tops in the conference. The offense is complemented by All-CCHA, All-American, and All- Everything goaltender Gary has come together and shown that this year's playoffs won't be the usual David and Goliath matchup. "OUR TEAM has been through thick and thin together," Berenson said. "Our kids are improving. There's enthusiasm. We're getting goalkeeping on a more consistent basis now. "We're getting better leadership from our senior players. I don't say we're better than (Michigan State or Lake Superior), but we are every bit as good as them." Lately, Michigan has proven that. After a 4-14 start, the Wolverines have turned the tide. They are 10-7-1 in their last 18 games and 6-2-1 in the last nine. During that span they have dominated their opponents, outscoring them 59-30. Senior Brad Jones has led the way, making his final collegiate hockey games count. He has been a one man wrecking crew, tearing through the opposition. His three- game hat trick streak ended last Saturday night against Alaska- Fairbanks. Warren Sharples has not played like a freshman, and the defense has withstood and turned away many enemy attacks. In short, the team is meshing just in the nick of time for the playoffs. The Wolverines could not ask for better preparation than an opponent like Bowling Green. Berenson ... cautiously optimistic Kruzich. The standout sports a 23- 3-2 mark along with a 3.35 goals against average. The Wolverines do not want to look past Bowling Green to the playoffs. Berenson's young team Laimbeer: lame excuse at center I By DOUGLAS VOLAN t Hey Piston fans. Relax. Your team isn't going anywhere. It's going to be the same old story - a defeat in the second round of the playoffs. There's no way your team can get past the Celtics with Bill Laimbeer at center. Laimbeer is a great rebounder and possesses an excellent J, but he's not an intimidator. No one is afraid of him. Every team that has made it to the NBA finals in the past decade has either had a dominating center, such as Moses Malone, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Robert Parish, Bill Walton, Akeem Olajuwon, and Wes Unseld, or a potentially dominating center, such as Darryl Dawkins and Marvin Webster. Laimbeer just cannot be dominating. Although the Pistons are experiencing great success this season, the playoffs will certainly be a different story. With the West Coast pansies not available to beat up on, the Pistons will have to play physical basketball night after night, something they just can't do. With Laimbeer out on the Phils reject Parrish CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies broke off negotiations with Lance Parrish over the possibility of a law suit by the free-agent catcher against the Philles and major league baseball, Phillies spokesman Larry Shenk 'said last night. Shenk said the Phillies and Parrish agreed Wednesday to financial terms of the $1 million contract for one year, but the two sides could not agree on a clause protecting the Phillies and major league baseball from legal action. In a brief statement read by Shenk, Phillies President Bill Giles said: "I'm very disappointed we couldn't work it out" ATTENTION STUDENTS! What the Pistons need is a seven-foot shot blocker in the middle, which would enable Laimbeer to play power forward. Even Artis Gilmore, who Detroit thought of acquiring in the preseason, would do the trick. The Pistons are stuck in the same rut that Milwaukee has been in for the past six years - win the division, and then lose in the playoffs to more physical opponents. The Pistons may top Atlanta during the regular season, but the Hawks have a better chance of advancing to the NBA finals. With 7-1 Tree Rollins and 7-0 Kevin Willis up front, the Hawks will give Boston a run for their money in the Eastern conference. Come on Piston fans. When Chuck Nevitt is your best shot blocker, you know you're in trouble. A Magical season After eight seasons of dazzling basketball fans all over the country, it is about time Magic Johnson wins the league's MVP award. Johnson, who has led the Lakers to the NBA finals six times, is among the league leaders in triple- doubles, exemplifying his incredible all-around abilities. But what makes Magic so special is his ability to put the ball exactly where his teammates need it in order to score. Just look what he Star Game. Without Magic, Chambers, the game's MVP, wouldn't have scored half his 34 points. Simply, Johnson is the Lakers. He does whatever is necessary to win. At the start of the season, the Lakers were in danger of falling off the top perch in the Western conference, but Magic provided scoring (with his new and improved jump shot) and leadership. He helped to prove that Los Angeles is the best in the West. To all you Michael Jordan fans, his time will come. Personally, I think that Michael is God. But this is Magic's year, and nobody can take it away from him.
