The Michigan Daily - Friday, February 20, 1987 - Page 3 Elvis imitator faces jury trial MSA reports to regents (continued from Page 1) for a jury trial. The trial will be held April 2 in Alexander's court. The complaint was filed on Nov. 24. Zafar pleaded not guilty to the charges at his arraignment Dec. 4, Rothis was visibly angry at the hearing yesterday, and said he wanted Zafar to "leave me alone" forever. During the hearing, Rothis indicated that he had felt harassed by Zafar's calls. Dagher sees it another way. :"This is the most ridiculous case I've ever seen, and it's just pre- posterous that it's in court," she said. She agreed her client made the calls, in which he sang such Elvis tunes as "Tutti Frutti." But, she said, "This was not harassment, this was a joke." Zafar and Rothis knew each other slightly before the calls started. And, Rothis played along with the prank, according to Dagher. She said Rothis would answer the phone "Elvis Presley Fan Club" when Zafar called, and would ask when Elvis would call back. Neither Rothis nor his attorney, Robert Cooper, would comment on the case. Some of the things "Elvis" said may have been construed as "off- color" by Rothis, said Dagher, but there were never any threats to Rothis's physical safety. The calls, said Dagher, were nothing but a "prank" carried out by Zafar as part of an "Elvis summer" Zafar and other engineering students were celebrating. By MARTHA SEVETSON Improvements in campus safety, restructuring the Michigan Student Assembly's committee system, and MSA elections will highlight the assembly's presentation to the University's Board of Regents today. MSA President Kurt Muenchow will present the assembly's annual report to the regents, at one of two opportunities given to MSA each year to address the board. "The regents take the oppor - tunity to review MSA's fiscal actions and other activities and to comment and ask questions," Muenchow said. According to Muenchow, this is the first year the report has included extensive writeups of MSA's community involvement in addition to the financial report. "It will let people see what we've accomplished," Muenchow said. According to the report, MSA has both restructured its committee system, now distinguishing bet - ween committees handling day-to- day matters and those addressing campus issues. The assembly also adopted a system of two elections each year, to prevent complete turnover in March. Chairs of MSA's Women Issues Committee Hillary Farber, an LSA junior, and LSA sophomore Jamie Palter, will present a slide show on campus safety to the regents. "This is an update on the changes which have been made in I the past couple of years," Palter said. She said the committee is impressed with the administration's response to recent safety concerns, and will offer a few suggestions for future improvements. Regent Deane Baker (D-Ann Arbor) said the assembly played a significant role in projects such as the installation of the emergency phone system. "I think that by and large they have done a good job of being responsible to the students," Baker said. Muenchow ... reports to regents ...............- COUPON ..............U j .
