And that is good news for either the Michigan Wolverines or the Wisconsin Badgers, who will meet at Crisler Arena at 8 p.m. tonight. Bill Frieder's Wolverines (15-9 overall, 6-6 Big Ten) are mired in a slump that includes losses to Ohio State, no. 2 Indiana, and Michigan State. "Were kind of in a lull here," said Frieder. "We've had the tough three-game road trip over the past two weeks and we came out on the short end." THE BADGERS (11-15 overall, 1-12 Big Ten) won't be shedding any tears for the Wolverines, though. The talented young team won 10 of its first 13 games, but looks as if it will turn in Wisconsin's worst conference record during head coach Steve Yoder's five-year tenure. "The frustrations ended about three weeks ago," said Yoder. "Now it's just a matter of going out and understanding that you are an athlete and athletes don't quit. And these guys are good athletes." If Monday night is any indication of how good a team Wisconsin can be, then Yoder is speaking the truth. The Badgers, led by the 20-point efforts of Mike Heineman and J.J. Weber, stayed even with league-leading Indiana before losing, 86-85, in three overtimes. And despite having only one conference win, the Badgers have Frieder worried. "THE WAY they played was sensational. If you take the way they played last night and compare it to the way we've played the last two weeks, they should be 15- or 20-point favorites." They're not. Yoder has a number of problems to contend with in getting his team ready for tonight's game. After Monday night's epic, his whole team could tire very quickly against the well-rested Wolverines. Heineman is banged up, although Yoder said he should be fine by tonight. Freshman Danny Jones has the flu and probably will not start, but will play, according to Yoder. Finally, the players are bogged down with mid-terms. Even at home, playing one of their best games of the season, the Badgers couldn't muster a win against the Wolverines, losing 84- 78. Glen Rice led Michigan with 27 points. AGAINST THE Wolverines tonight, Yoder said, "We've got to stop the perimeter play of Garde Thompson, and (Gary) Grant, and (Antoine) Joubert, but we've got to be aware of the improvement of the inside players." The Badgers will be helped out by a less-than-healthy Grant. According to Frieder, the junior guard has an injury similar to the one that sidelined Michigan football player Paul Jokisch for two games last season. Frieder said Grant's upper leg muscles are strained and there is some bleeding, which has limited Grant to "one or two real practices the past two weeks. "He just does not have the lateral movement he's had and he's about half a step behind where he's been,": said Frieder. "But if we don't play him, there's no NCAA tournament. for us, because we need him even f he's only 70 percent." The Wolverines have six regular season games left - Wisconsin,' Northwestern, Minnesota, Iowa, Purdue, and Illinois - and probably need three or four more wins to make the post-season tournament. Only the Minnesota and Iowa games are on the road.
