Lines 'M' icers hit peak... ... in season best streak By PETE STEINERT In recent years, spring break at Michigan has brought to mind two things: fun in the sun for winter weary students and the end of another not so memorable Wolverine hockey season. This year, however, things may change. Rest easy though, Florida is not predicting snow flurries for next week, but the hockey season may not end as abrubtly as it has in the past for head coach Red Berenson. Unlike a year ago at this time when Michigan was losing eight straight games heading into the Central Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs, the third year coach has his team playing by far its best hockey of the season. With the playoffs just two weeks away, it could not have come at a better time. The sixth-place Wolverines are 6-3-1 over the last five weeks and riding a five-game unbeaten streak. In that 10-game span they have outscored their opponents, 62-35. Their recent surge should not come as a total shock to close hockey followers. The players predicted back in October that the team would start coming together around Christmas, and their prophesies have proved accurate. "Before Christmas with 10 freshmen in the lineup, they weren't really sure what to expect," Myles O'Connor said. "(Now) from the seniors on down to the freshmen, everybody's playing excellent hockey." So what does all this mean? It means that Michigan has a legitimate chance of advancing past the first round of the playoffs, something it has failed to do since joining the CCHA in 1981. Forget the fact that its record is a modest 14-21-1. Like college basketball experts say, it does not matter how your team starts but how it finishes. You want your team peaking at post-season time, and the Wolverines are indeed peaking. "The important thing is we're improving, and this is a good time of year to improve," Berenson said. "It's too late to reminisce about should haves and could haves. The important thing is we've seen an overall improvement during the season." It is easy to see the team's improvement in all phases of the game from the goaltending of Warren Sharples to the emergence of four balanced forward lines. Michigan's new found success has given the team a ne life, and players have an air of confidence that has been missing in til, past. "The way the team's going right now, if the score is lvk1, 3-3, in the third (period), we know we're going to win," said senior right wing Bruce Macnab. "We don't have doubts." That's a switch. In the first half the Wolverines let so many games slip away in the third period that the final frame had the same affect as a wet bar of soap. It does not appear to bother the team either that it will have to go on the road for a best of three series most likely against Lake Superior State. Michigan has shown this season that it can win away from Yost Ice Arena. "They're starting to get some genuine, not only individual confidence, but team confidence," Berenson said. "If you look around the room, we say, 'Geez, we can win. We can beat these teams.' That's a good feeling." "The way we're looking now, we're looking good for the playoffs," Macnab added. "We've got as good a chance as anyone." So do not be surprised if when you return from your vacation ventures, they are still playing hockey in Ann Arbor. Blue wrestlers sweep UDame and CMU 4 By BILL ZOLLA It turned out to be a very nice Valentines Day weekend for the Michigan wrestling team. The Wolverines improved their overall record to 9-5-1 with victories over Notre Dame (31-7) on Friday night, and Central Michigan (19-14) on Sunday. Michigan's rout of Notre Dame was their largest margin of victory this season. The Wolverines won eight out of ten weight classes, including 167 lbs. where unranked junior Mike Amine surprised sixth ranked All-American Chris Genesar in a 9-3 decision. Amine won again on Sunday to improve his record to 22-12. Also winning two matches this weekend were Joe Pantaleo at 158 lbs., and Bob Potokar in thq heavyweight division. Pantaleo, a talented sophomore, raised his record to 33-4 with two decisive victories. Potokar is now 24-15 on the season. Most encouraging about this weekend's victories were the performances of Doug Wyland at 126 lbs., and John Fisher at 134 lbs. Michigan's two top wrestlers, both ranked fourth in the country in their respective decisions, returned to action by winning two matches apiece. Wyland, still recovering from mono, improved his record to 23-3 with victories over David Carlin of ND,18-1, and Harry Richards of CMU, 6-4., 4 CCHA Scorecard 4 CCHA Standings Goaltending SPA CES STILL A VAILABLE BEER APPRECIATION AND HOME BREWING FINANCIAL PLANNING SIGN LANGUAGE I(Adv.)
