UNDERGROUND
Continued from Page 9
"There's definitely an underground
scene that exists here," Henssler
said. "But the whole thing is
focused toward out-of-town bands.
It's also too factionalized. I mean,
it's all here - a college town,
creative people, WCBN, School-
kid's - but things are just too
political to conducively support a
local scene. It's really too bad
things don't get going because
there's a bigger market for what
Gemp and us do on a national
record-buying level."
Tom Gemp's Dunf has his own
sound solutions to the city's
somnabulence.
"People need to stop wor -
shipping the 'bigger' bands and
start focusing their attention
locally. The audience is being
cheated out of control. If the
Halfway would relax a little, and
the Blind Pig and the Nectarine
open their minds, and if WCBN
would sponsor live local music on
the air more than once a year, like
once a week or month, this place
would really start to hop. Until
then, the only way a band like ours
can make a dent is to keep on
punching, banging our heads into
the wall until it breaks down."
Rubin is a Daily music critic.
