No ifs antis or butts in The Michigan Daily -Wednesday, February 11, 1987 -Page 9 ight game ranted, boxing is a silly sport. You hit your opponent in the } face as hard and as often as you can until either he can't stand up or until he is too bloody to see two steps in front of him. But what occurred last weekend is ridiculous, even by boxing's standards. Saturday, Donald "Cobra" Curry beat Tony "Dr. Detroit" Montgomery to win the super- welterweight title ... or is it the junior-middleweight title? Actually, Dr. Detroit was disqualified. Throughout the fight, Montgomery. head-butted Curry and was warned by the referee for doing so. Finally, after already taking two points away from Montgomery, the referee stopped the fight and awarded the championship to Curry. Head butts occur during most fights, so this was considered normal. However what ensued was not. Immediately following the disqualification, Curry moved toward Montgomery and landed a right hand to the jaw. Not only was it the hardest thrown punch of the Adamantly Speaking BY ADAM OCHLIS GRADUATE TEACHING ASSISTANTSHIPS AVAILABLE 1987-1988 ENGLISH DEPART- MENT, EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY Teach college composition while English. $3800 plus 16 hours free1 working towards an M.A. in tuition per year. Both fighters saw the cheap shot as no big deal. "I just guess he was mad because I butted him," said Montgomery afterwards. This perplexes me. Were the butts intentional? Was this part of Montgomery's strategy? Usually boxers want to take away Arnative Creer t Cter Invites Students To Meet With Sue Hutchinson, Community Organizer from ACORN TODAY Wed., Feb. 11 1 -4 p.m. 130 Tyler, Residential College, East Quad the opponent's jab or to go to the belly with some hard body punches. Not Montgomery. He had a new idea. Hit Curry's head with his own and hope Curry goes down and can't get up. Of course. "I just had to get him back for one of those butts," said Curry. Brilliant. Always thinking, that Donald Curry is. He wins the championship, gets a lot of money, impresses no one, and then goes after the loser when the fight is over. Apparently the federation that sponsored the fight is holding back Curry's check. What will come out of this? Probably nothing. Boxing promoters, for the most part, are twisted and inept. The most famous of them, Don King, was charged with tax evasion, recently. These guys are not always on the ball. Curry should be suspended, fined heavily, and/or banned from boxing. I realize sportsmanship does not run rampant in professional boxing, but this was out of line. Perhaps worse than the events inside the ring, were the comments made by CBS' announcers at ringside. Tim Brandt accurately described the cheap shot as a right hook, however expert analyst Gil Clancy saw it differently. "No, it was a straight right hand," he said. "Curry knows from his training not to throw a right hook. He's far too professional to do that." Please. If nothing comes of this, it will add another sad chapter to a sport that has deteriorated rapidly. Currently, there are only three individuals in the fight game worth paying big bucks to see - Mike Tyson, Marvin Hagler, and Sugar Ray Leonard.nAnd Tyson will be the only big draw left when Hagler retires after disfiguring Leonard in April. Sorry, Detroit fans, Tommy Hearns is not in the same category as the other three. Hearns has lost to all the good fighters he's fought, and is constantly changing weight classes so he can be remembered for winning championships in umpteen different divisions. But who is there to fight? Winning championships in multiple divisions like Alexis Arguello did is something. Winning championships by beating Englishman Dennis Andries, like Hearns will try to do next month, is another. To put it simply, being a boxing champ is not like it used to be. Last Friday, former Olympian Mark Breland won the WBA welterweight championship by beating something known as Harold Volbrecht. On the same card, Dwight Muhammad Qawi beat one Cecil Maldonado. While he didn't win a title, Qawi, who belongs in fat camp rather than a boxing ring, "established" himself as the number one contender. Boxing once was a sport that was fun to watch, with classy and charismatic individuals such as Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, and George Foreman, who, by the way, is coming out of retirement at age 37 to fight Bob Hitzelburger. 4r seilgetEach ' special guest FIRST 3 VISITSF A- rFOR NEW CUSTOMERS AbsouteneralApplies To Booth Only NO APPOINTMENT NECESSARY.
