"People tend to question my experience in the broadcasting business, but what they do not. know is the fact that I hosted a radio talk show for eight years before I retired," said Dierdorf. The CBS radio affiliate, KMOX, decided to hire Dierdorf after he was a guest on a talk show during the regular NFL season."The people working there obviously thought I was intelligent and humorous enough to grant me my own show and I have been working there since." D I E R D O R F's television broadcasting career began with football three years ago. "I feel that I can broadcast a football game," he ,said. "The people do not turn on the game to listen to the broadcasters, but because they enjoy the game," said Dierdorf. "My job is to enrich the people's appreciation of the game. "I want to be able to express my thoughts clearly and closely within an economy of words. If I can accomplish this I feel that I can help the viewer understand what is happening and thus aid their enjoyment of the game." COPIES 2Y2 FEB. -13 kinko-r5 1220 S. University location only 747-9070 By practicing what he preaches, Dierdorf has climbed the CBS football ladder very quickly. Already, he has become the number-two color commentator behind the infamous John Madden. "I AM fortunate to have risen so quickly in the broadcasting business, but I don't believe that I have reached a standard by which others should be judged,' said Dierdorf. "I would be naive to think that after two years, I am already being emulated by upcoming sportscasters. I am definitely in no position to be emulated at this time in my career." Last month, Dierdorf reached a point in his career that very few broadcasters ever reach when he travelled to Pasadena to cover the Super Bowl. Dierdorf did not actually broadcast the game, but he provided added insight for the CBS viewing audience. "It was extremely satisfying to be a part of the Super Bowl," said Dierdorf. "As a player, I was never lucky enough to play for a Super Bowl team: Coming here as a broadcaster though, has been extremely enjoyable. It was better going there as a broadcaster rather than not going there at all." Only 37, Dierdorf plans to continue his present career. "Right now, I just want to get better at broadcasting," explained Dierdorf. 4 ;1 Dan Dierdorf, an All-American tackle for Michigan in 1970, is now a suc- cessful sports broadcaster.
