ARTS the Michigan Daily Wednesday, February 11, 1987 Page 7 'Mtaphorclmrels itrigue the eyes. By Jenny Put The newest exhibit at the University of Michigan Museum of Art, "Legacy of Metaphor: Photographs as Equivalent", spotlights the works of six great American photographers: Ansel 2Y2~ F. !-13S Adams, Elliot Erwitt, Wynn Bullock, Minor White, Michael Smith, and Paul Caponigro. Their photos follow Alfred Steiglitz's philosophy of "Equivalence", which is a theory stating that the meaning and response to an image may have- little or nothing to do with the subject matter 'Nine of the photographs featured are black and white, with only one color print from Paul Caponigro, titled "Redding Woods, Connecticut." This photograph captures the essence of a peaceful October day, with the leaves turning a burnt orange and the barren treetops casting shadows on the forest floor. (Can't you just feel the delightful Autumn wind rustling the paper now? No?) Half of the photographs in this exhibit deal with nature, such as "Sun Over the Pacific" by Minor White and "Near Blue River" by Michael Smith. The rest are austere interpretations of hands, doorways, posts, and windowsills meant to bring profound thoughts and images to mind. These photos date from 1947 to the early 1980's. Generally speaking, this is a very pleasing exhibit to look at, assuming you're into photography. The subject matter is simple, yet very striking and interesting in it's own way and even if the photos don't knock you off your feet, they aren't supposed to. These photographs "act as a symbol or play the role of a metaphor for something that is beyond the subject photographed." Wow.
