SAULT STE. MARIE - The
Michigan hockey team has come a
long way this season. No place
was this more evident than in
Saturday's 9-5 thrashing of a
talented Lake Superior team.
The win gave head coach Red
Berenson his first victory ever at
Sault Ste. Marie and sent notice to
the rest of the CCHA to watch out
for the vastly improved Wolverines.
"We have proven a lot in the last
eight games," Berenson said. "We
are making a lot of progress now
and this weekend was a good

give.
indication of that."
BRAD JONES spearheaded
the Michigan attack. The senior had
hat tricks both Friday and Saturday
nights and tallied nine points on the
weekend. His performance
catapulted him into second place on
the all-time Michigan list for
assists and points in a career. He
needs two more assists to pass
Dave Debol and permanently etch
his name into the Wolverine record
book.
"I can't say enough about how
Brad Jones played this weekend,"
Berenson said. "I expect him to
play that way every game and that's
a lot, but this weekend gives you
an idea about how good he can be."
Jones credits Berenson for
hoisting him up to the level he

should be playing at. "Coach has
been telling me the last few
weekends the things I have to do to
play well, and I've been doing what
he's been telling me. It's paid off."
SATURDAY NIGHT, the
Wolverines blew open a 2-2 game
in the second period by scoring five
straight goals. They outhustled,
outplayed, and outeverythinged the
Lakers, who were never able to
recover.
An indicator of how well things
went for Michigan was a key goal
by defenseman Alex Roberts, his
first of the season.
"I just buried my head and shot
it," the defensive stalwart said. "I
didn't even know where the shot
was going. Jonesie set me up
perfectly, and he might have killed

me if I blew it."
That goal gave Michigan a 5-2
lead at 9:56 of the third period, and
the Wolverines never looked back.
Had they not looked back on
Friday night, the Wolverines could
have been coming back to Ann
Arbor with two wins instead of one
win and a tie.
The team led 5-0 after Brad Jones
scored a power play goal just 27
seconds into the third period. One
might have thought the cat was in
the bag, yet somehow it managed
to escape.
MICHIGAN'S troubles began
when Laker head coach Frank
Anzalone pulled his goalie with 16

minutes left in the game. This
gamble gave the Lakers an extra
skater, and the edge they needed to
get back in the contest.
"We weren't doing anything else
well," Anzalone said. "What the
heck, may as well play without a
goalie. Tonight we got lucky and it
worked."
Laker Mike De Carle batted in
the first goal off a mad scramble in
front of the Michigan goal.
Wolverine netminder Warren
Sharples was outraged and claimed
he had possession of the puck
before it went in. Sharples was
assessed a 10 minute misconduct
for arguing, and the Wolverines

began to unravel.
"In the third period there were a
couple of calls that destroyed the
hockey game," Berenson said. "To
give Sharples a 10 minute
misconduct is completely out of
line."
The Lakers went on to send the
game into overtime. Even though
no one scored in the extra session,
the Wolverines gained the
confidence they needed for Saturday
night's rout.
Berenson came home with his
first win against Lake Superior and
a team that may open a few
people's eyes in the weeks to come.
