The Michigan Daily - Monday, February 9, 1987 - Page 5 Candidates disagree over housing issue (Continued from Page 1) not need more developments, but there are environmental factors that play a role in city planning. "As far as the skyline, I want to see it kept low," Witchie said. Incoming city council members will be faced with reports on the proposed pay equity study. The pay equity study will be. looking for sexual discrimination in the city's job classifications. Coleman said the feels the city pay scale study * will help councilmembers reorganize the pay classifications. She hopes to see more women and minorities heading departments. Elton said there are "bad attitudes" among city employees because "The city is a rotten employer. Until that stops they will have the same problems with high turn over, unresponsive employees and difficult unions, pay equity is a little part of the problem, but at least they are starting on the problem." Witchie said he would like to see the pay equity study directed towards investigating equal pay for people doing equal jobs. He believes city employers place a value judgment on a person's job based on education. Both Democrats emphasized the need to consider the human services involved in each issue. Both agree that federal budget cuts have burdened the city. "I think that how we care for the least among us shows how we care for humanity as a whole," Coleman said. Elton said that our federal government creates more hungry people every day by cutting off revenue sharing and increasing military spending. This has created more of a burden on the city, Elton said. Coleman has worked on several campaigns for other public figures. She has raised issues on campus such as military research and discrimination, she said. Advisory group plagued by student resignations (Continued from Page 1) chow resigned and accused Joseph- son of usurping the assembly's :right to appoint the students. "There exists a real fear that if }the University administration goes around hand-picking students with- out MSA, they could legitimize K their views without real student .input," Muenchow said. Other students on the caucus were surprised by the resignations, but hope that the momentum of the council will not be hindered. The remaining five students have been meeting since December. "It's unfortunate when politics gets in the way of trying to do something good," Duderstadt said. At the same time, details about Duderstadt's undergraduate initiat- ives fund have failed to reach University students. Duderstadt announced last month that he is soliciting proposals from students, faculty, staff, and admin- istrators on how best to improve the entire undergraduate experience. He has set aside approximately $1 million a year for the effort. Duderstadt set an April 1 deadline for proposals and plans to form a committee of students, faculty, and administrators to help him review the proposals by May 1, when he will announce which ones he plans to implement and fund with the necessary resources.
